Tranny fluid for 190e - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

I am having alittle trouble shifting my 190e 2.3 8v with 5 speed manual trans. I figured that if i change my transmission fluid, shifting through the gears would be easier, plus I don't know weither the previous owner even changed the fluid at all.
Does anyone know what transmisson fluid I chould use, and how much of it I will need? Also, how do I change the transmission fluid? I can find the plug where I can drain the fluid, but I don't see where I fill the transmission.

Pete, you drain the fluid from the pan using the drain plug and also on this car you drain the torque converter. You may be better off having a MB specialist do this for you IMO.
Then you remove the transmission pan entirely and replace the filter, which is held on with 3 machine screws. After everything is put back together, about 3 quarts of transmission fluid (DexronIII/Mercon) is added through the transmission dipstick tube (use an appropriate funnel), then the balance can be added after starting the engine. It will need a total of roughly 6.5 quarts.

You'll also need a new transmission oil filter and transmission pan gasket. Don't over-torque the pan bolts or you'll have a leaking tranny.

If you look in the back of your owner's manual it has the specs for just about all the fluids for your car. Sometimes the inside back cover has a "Gas station Information" which is where I'd look first.

Otherwise the the specifications section.

Duh!

I see so many auto trans questions that's what I had on my mind. Sorry for not reading closer.
This is a simple job. Drive the car about 5 miles or so, the longer the better, to really get the fluid warm. Remove the plug on the side of the transmission first (the fill hole), then the drain plug. After it's done draining, reinstall the drain plug and fill it up using the fill hole, until the fluid just starts to run out of the fill hole.
I am not positive, but I believe the manual trans also uses ATF in it. I agree the best place to check is in the owners manual, it'll probably show the type of fluid as well as the quantity, but again I recommend filling it til it starts to run out the fill hole.
