300 Turbo injection pump, '84 v.'85
Hey-hey!!!,
I just got a 1985 300 TD wagon with a siezed motor and a replacement. The replacement is a late '84 with the suspension pump but several other differences. Most critical of these is the injection pump. The '85 has a box on the engine side, whilst the '84 has only a blank boss for the box mount. The box has a three wires and a connector in the upper center of the firewall. What is this box, what does it do, and most importantly, can I drive without it? I'm not sure of the condition of the siezed '85 motor's pump so I'd like to avoid changing it over and re-timing it. thanks for the help, Douglas Piccard |

Hey-hey!!!,
After looking through the manual page by page, I found most of the answer. In 14.8-050/13 to15. the box on side of injection pump is an inductive throttle position sensor. Moving the mixture control varies the inductance and Electronic control unit translates it into position, in addition to temp sensor at first( front )plug in the head, determines wheter or not to open the pressure valve( called 'switchover valve', located on firewall nest to brake booster) and allow full power. Short answer, I think I need to swap over to the '85 injection pump( D-Oh,stupid pump!!!), and remove the plug in the head and put in the 85's temp sensor. regards, Douglas |
