The blower motor in my 89 300TE started running intermittently last week and has now stopped working altogether. The pushbutton control seems to work since it will adjust flaps, activate AC compressor and activate the heater. The car is booked in at the local dealership (CAN$80/hr!!) for some diagnostics. If they suggest replacing the blower motor, if have a few questions before giving them the go-ahead (my wallet feels lighter already...):
Can these units be rebuilt? -or are rebuilt units available? Can a DIYer tackle the replacement job? Is this a typical problem?

Wether a DIY selfer can do the job or not depends entirely on his mechanical experience and skill. The blower motor on your 124 chassis car is not a piece of cake like they used to be on 123cars. It's an easy job for an experienced pro but before you decide to tackle this or any other job yourself. You should ask yourself,1:do I really know what I'm doing here? 2;How much am I saving if I goof and screw something up?

A good example, I just finished building a 427cobra replica to cruise around and play in. It was really simple for me,but I've been a mercedes tech for 18 years and have about 8 years roadrace car fabrication experience. Now,if I try to cook dinner tonight for my wife,I gaurantee you that she'll have to either kick me out of her kitchen or call 911 to put the fire out before I'm through. Happy motoring,Alain

This car should have an external blower fuse that is located outside the fuse box inside of a small black box. Flip it open and see if the fuse is blown inside. I've seen a million of them fail!! 30A strip fuse.

nick: i didn't want to scare you but i just had a similar problem two week ago. while the blower stopped working, it was the relay switches that was defective. cost of the part was CDN$460 and change, plus $200 labor, plus GST/PST. these are not dealership cost but my own MB mechanic. good luck!!

The fuse is fine. I'm on my way to the dealership now, so I guess I'll have the verdict soon...

And the verdict is...
CAN$290 for a new motor assembly and $80 labour for the installation. Oh well.
