The 4th gear comes back!
Hi guys,
My car is having a bad habit. I was on the highway at about 80mph when suddenly the 4th gear returned by itself to 3rd, and never went back. I could drove it home, and today seemed that only the first tree gear are rougher among shifts. What is happening? Alexei - 300 CE- 24V - 1991 - 25k. |

Get a dealer or automatic specialist to drive it as soon as possible - these are symptoms many of us have experienced before transmission failures.
good luck!

Uh Oh!
Sounds like a tranny overhaul is in the future, get it fixed fast the MB trannys are built very tough but if you continue to drive it and fry the planetary gearset it will be extremely expensive to fix. |

Ok, thanks guys!. I´ve already parked the car.
Is there a part number for a complete overhaul kit? Where could I find it? Alexei |

I use a source here in Atlanta, Gerorgia called Transmission Crafters of Atlanta, they carry the complete O-haul kit with clutches and steels. I would caution you not to tackle an automatic tranny overhaul unless you know what you are doing.
Also MB has some service buletins on some of their automatic tranny's for part upgrades and service procedures to help with better shifting, lube flow, servo engagement, etc. good luck Geoff Furr 1985 380 SE |

The condition you describe can also be caused by being overfull, when foaming occurs - the expressway is the common denominator. A packed trans filter will do similar.
If it hasn't been done recently I would suggest servicing. The filter can be diagnosed by one who has seen the problem; the paper part will be buckled inward at the inlet. If the symptoms go away, don't worry about it. BTW there are plenty of good sources for OE tranny parts. If you can't find any email me. They won't come in a kit except for the gasket set. Don't use anything but OE seals and clutches. By OE I mean in MB packaging. We have had deficiencies with all the aftermaket sets.

Hi Guys,
I´ve just got the car back and I would like to thank all for the help. An overhaul was done by the local dealer and the shift is great. Only the price was the bad part of this...... Regards, Alexei |
