New Brushes in a 380SL Blower Motor?

I am trying to get The Wayward Woman's climate control functioning to the point where the car will pass a VA safety inspection, which means functioning Defrost.

I have determined that the blower motor is inoperative. I was about to start looking for a (shudder) new or used one, when I noticed that George Murphy (longtime MBCA tech guy) sells replacement brushes for $19 a set.

I have the fan assembly out and stripped to the point where I can access the brushes. I have removed the little springs that hold them against the armature, but they don't want to move.

Has anyone attempted this, and if so, how did it turn out?
