Question fire extinguisher in Benz cars

I often wonder why there is a fire extinguisher in Benz cars only. I see them mainly in the front of the W124 driver's seat. Are these cars really prone to flare up when you are driving it? Why then the need for fire extinguishers? Why not in other car makes? Why Mercedes Benz? Is it the possibility of the wiring harness bursting into flames??? Someone please tell me the story about this item, thanks.

well...maybe our european members can speak to this, but I think that in some european countries, you are required to have a fire extinguisher in your vehicle.

I was driving with my friend in his dads work truck and we spotted a package carrier. His way right rear wheel bearing was on fire, we put it out with an extinguisher. Sometimes you have to be prepaired to help people out I guess. None of the W124 cars I have seen have them. If its a factory option, what are the part numbers, id like to put them in.

Forum member "ricardo" posted several pics of the seat-mounted extinguisher in his 500E and gave part numbers...search the archives.

You can also have a custom-made fire extingusiher bracket installed like this....

What really annoys me, though, is the couple of times that I've used my extinguisher to put out someone else's fire (mostly while camping), no one ever offers to pay for a refill

Why would you put a roll bar in a 500E? Unlesss you tuned it so it runs faster than 12 seconds in the .25 mile.

I like it, I think I will do it to my car someday too. Does it cramp the back seat space for passengers?

I know how you feel dean. You save someones live and they dont even care.

Fire Extinguisher Option

The M-B- fire extiguisher can be ordered in almost all markets using code 682 (68/2), and can be fitted to all M-B automobiles and 4x4s.

It is an extra cost option which is almost always installed inmediantly in front of the driver's seat for quick access.

It uses Halon, a very expensive chemical component which does not stain paint, chrome or rubber.

The picture below is taken from the Special Equipment catalog from 1986.

Wow, halon. Now thats illegal. It works really good, but its hard to use your halon extinguisher because you want to save it for you.

If someone could come up with part numbers that would be really cool. Thanks.

I've tried ordering this from a MB dealer, and no dice. MBUSA won't bring them in, and won't bring in the halon extinguisher.

You're better off getting a Halon substitute and a stainless-steel bracket mounted to either the seat-pan or the center-console.

On our 1988 wagon it's in the center-console (I don't have the storage compartment), the 500E's is in the trunk.

I'll try and post a picture later.

BTW- Dean's roll-bar and extinguisher is needed for the Silver State Classic at his speed-class. Mine only needed the extinguisher.

I've heard of a few W124s/W201s starting to burn - mainly from underneath the dash on the drivers side. Some insurance companies give a discount if you have a fire-extuinguisher in your car - mine does, hence did I just recently buy a used one on Ebay.. Wonder if it still works

On crappy american cars the calipers can lock and cause the wheel to catch on fire, happened to my sisters boyfriends car, just as he was pulling into our driveway to drop her off from work the car burst into flames, good thing we have a hose

The halon replacement is halonite and is preferable to the dry chem extinguishers because it's multi fire type rated and won't harm circuit boards.

I am in germany now, but I only can wonder how much trouble I would get into to bring back fireextinguishers....

I'm pretty sure there is, or used to be, a law in Germany, you had to carry an emergency medical kit, as well as a reflective warning triangle in the car.
Did M-B provide them " free of charge " ?
Not sure.

Can you still order the Emergency Triangle for the trunk of the car? All our MB in the Philippines had one. I can't seem to find one here. Any suggestions where to order it?
