ASR light 400e

have 1992 Mercedes 400E...The ASR light comes on erratically and wont go off...stopping and restarting the engine resets it until next time....Mercedes shop has reset the code and checked out the wires and sensors...they not know anything else to do except replace computer at $1000+....it was ok all summer but now that cold weather is here it went on 3 times in past 2 days ..when it comes on it could be that the tires did spin but it wont shut off by itself. ANY IDEAS? Oh by the way, its the light on the dash bar that has problems turning off, not the speedometer triangular light. thanks.

OhioMike,
Where are you in Ohio? Click on the e-mail button in my message here and let me know. I'm looking for an E420 (W124) and it looks like you might have some insight on what to look for on these cars.

Thanks,

What codes did the scanner retrieve from the EA (electronic accelerator)??
The most common problem is the throttle actuator.

OhioMike:

Are you talking about the yellow triangle ASR light that comes on when you spin the wheels or the small square ASR light along the bottom of the instrument cluster, like the battery light, ABS light, etc?

Start with a search on this topic.

Then, like MB Doc says, you need to figure out how to pull the codes. Many, many causes of this behavior. On mine, it was a faulty brake light switch. You'll waste a lot of time until you pull the codes.

MB has all kinds of service bulletins on early ASR vehicles! Everything from from throttle actuators, ASR ECUs', E-GAS ECUs', etc. I just finished one today on a 1993 140. Although the vehicle needed an updated ECU for E-GAS, the closed throttle position switch(located on the gas pedal) was the reason the light was on. It passed all the standard electrical tests. I physically removed it and bench tested it to get it to fail. This was an extremely intermittent problem, but I think the recent cold weather here made it worse. Anyway, the system on your 124 should be almost identical. Codes to look for are: E-GAS/224, ASR/030. There is information available in WIS and the old Red Fiche(anybody remember those?). Good luck
