I also would like to see the pictures and any other instuctional info on replacing the vent louvre lights on the W210. I checked mine yesterday and found the center and passenger side lights are out. Funny, I never noticed until I saw this post regarding replacing the bulb.

Thumbwheel photos

Sorry,, but i have the photos, but they are to large to put on this web site they average 400kb in size.. I was not thinking when I took the pictures...

Basically.. here it goes..

1. Remove the side panel on the right side of the air vent. (open the Car door for this)
2. Remove the glove compartment, same as you would to change the air filters.
3. Remove the 2 speaker grill screws. and then the grill
4. Slide the wooden trim to the right, the trim is key holed once you slide it then pull it toward you.
5. Remove the 2 screws to remove the air vent.
6. The light will be behind there on a small wire..

Let me know if you have more questions

Peter,

Obviously the designs on US & UK specs are different.
To remove the passenage air vent, I don't need to remove the glovebox. I only need to remove the side panel, the narrow trim that goes all the way across the top of the vent/glovebox and then the 2 screws on top of the air vent ( exposed once the trim is removed). Please see previous posting on the removal of the side air vent procedure on a UK spec'd 1998 W210 elegance.
I had the centre thumbwheel light bulb changed by an independant Merc specialist. I didn't get the chance to tape the procedure and they only charged me £10. They roughly told me that they need to remove the centre console trim to get to the 2 screws below the air vents and behind the centre wood trim.

Hope this help.

David.

I have a 95 E320 and have successfully changed the bulbs on the passenger side and middle vent control wheels.

First - be patient - it takes some care and tiime.

Passenger side - note that the 95 E320 does not have a glove box, but a passenger side air-bag.

Undo the 4 clips which hold the vent in-place while applying pressure to remove the vent. I used a gas pliers whose jaws were wrapped with duct tape to get a good grip on one one of the louvers and slowly worked back and forth undoing the clips and sliding the vent out. Once it is out, the bulb socket can be unclipped from the louver and the bulb replaced.

Middle vent -

1 - disconnect the battery
2. underneath the dash under the airbag, there is a single screw - remove this screw which allows you to slide out the airbag enough to gain access to a screw which secures the middle louver assembly (this is the same screw which is accessable when the glove box door is open - but no door on the 95 E320)
3. get out the gas pliers with the duct tape and slowly work out the vent as described on the passenger side.
4. Again remove the bulb socket and change the bulb.
5 Re-assemble and slide the air-bag back home and replace the screw below the dash.
Reconnect the battery.

When I did this, it took me about a 1/2 hr for each bulb - on average.

My drivers side has yet to burn out - and I'm glad!

Tom, thanks for the detailed instructions. Is the '95 E320 a W210?
