420sel center console

i'm working on my 88 420 and would like to remove the wood panel where the shifter is. any secrets on taking this piece off? also how can i remove the floor console itself. i want to detail it and my rear heater vent seems to be clogged or at best not working. any help would be appreciated.

You must remove the ashtray & it's frame first. There are 2 screws that must come out so that the wood can be removed.

afmcorp:

I'm not a mechanic or even a benz owner (yet) but I've been reading a lot about the 126's and I think your back seat air vent is a common problem that will not be fixed by cleaning it out. I'm pretty sure it is vacuum controlled by the climate control system and there is a fix for it. Do a search or maybe someone else knows.

Not vacuum controlled.

The rear vent for fresh air is cable controlled via a two piece cable. If the slider is difficult to move, either the slider is gummed up or the cable is in a bind. Could also be the lever under the dash is binding.

Try doing a search on "center console 126", or something similar. There should be some posts with detailed steps and pictures.

thanks m.b.doc. it worked just fine. once the ashtray was out the coin pocket snapped out and the console moved forward like a piece of cake. now i just need to unclip the switches and i can refinish the plate.

you wouldn't happen to know where i can get that rubber beauty ring that goes around the shifter hole would you?

tks again
