New 'clunk' sound after new sway bar bushings
 

I just had my snow tires mounted and front sway bar bushings replaced on the '94 wagon. Now I feel and hear a 'clunk' in the steering wheel when going over small bumps in the road. Didn't do this before new sway bar bushings. The temp around here has not gotten above 28 F for a few days, could the new bushings just be coldand trying to settle in?

It's time to crawl under there and check to see that those bushings were put in, and put in correctly. The body mount bushings are split to go over the bar, and if not put properly in place, will work loose.

That's weird, usually its the other way around, clunks before replacement!

Maybe one of the bushing locations was not properly tightened?

I do not know about 94 Wagons, but the front bushings for my 95 E320 are not split. You must remove sway bar to install the new bushings.

If your bushings were split, someone may have taken a short cut

This may sound really obvious, but make sure the lug nuts were completely tightened. This has actually happened to me (at a tire store, no less), and it was certainly NOT the first thing I checked.

A bad motor mount will ALSO make the noise you described. Perhaps it hasn't made itself known until the suspension has been tightened up.

Bushes are not supplied split. It sounds like they fitted them the wrong way round. Inners are a different size to outers, if they got them wrong they would have had to split the small ones to get them on and the large ones would be loose hence the clunk.

I purchased front sway bar bushings and the dealer gave me the wrong part. Maybe the tech put the wrong part on maybe too big and wasn't sharp enough to know something was wrong.
