Sorry, posting a new one to get your attn, Benzmac. Saw you mention "every 15K" for valve adjustment...This is news to me and I'm concerned mine may need it ASAP since I have no idea when or if this was done at all. Are you talking about 617.95X engines ? I suppose a smooth running engine doesn't mean a valve adjustment isn't needed ? Are there telltale signs of needing one or is this mandatory routine checking/adjustment ? Yet another thing to take care of.... While we're at it, does this "15K" requirement apply to the non-turbo 617.912 engine ? (Can a loud clatter during idle be caused by out of adjustment valves ?) All of the 61-.--- engines get a 15k mile maintenace service that includes the valve adjustment!
The 60-.--- engines are the newer ones that never need it. IE hydraulic valves. ------------------ Benzmac: ASE CERTIFIED MASTER AUTO TECHNICIAN SERVICE MANAGER FOR 14 BAY FACILITY MERCEDES SPECIALIST 8 YRS PARTNER IN MERCEDESSHOP.COM |
Yikes....
Better get on the stick asap. Thanks, Benzmac. I see that you sell the 14mm wrenches. Do I also absolutely need the "holding wrench for valve spring retainer (615 589 00 03 00)" ? Looks like it will make the job easier if working solo. Also, will the two 14mm valve adjusting wrenches and the above holding wrench work on all the 61X engines ? Want to adjust both the 617.912 and 617.951 engines... |
To my knowledge it will work on both engines. I never use the holding wrench because a figured out a way to do the whole job in about 30-35 minutes. I just put the two wrenches together ; if the tolerence needs to decrease, I will turn the top one to the right and tighten the bottom nut against it. If the tolerance needs to increase, I will hold the top nut and move the bottom nut to the left and tighten the top one on it. Works great.

Wow, Benzmac -
Sounds like a nifty trick but it's all Latin to me. It will be easier for me to digest when I dive in there have the whole thing in front of me. Just one more question - the Parts Shop lists two wrenches, one of which is for the 617 engine (615 589 ---). The other one (616 589 ---) is for which cars ? Thanks for the tip. |
