I bought a replacement (MB part) rearview mirror to replace ours which broke. It seems to be a spring loaded, (breakaway?) mount with no screws, etc. How does one remove the old mount? Is there a tool or do you just push it toward the windshield? I hate to get too "western" with it for fear of breaking something else or having the mirror shatter in my hand. Any thoughts?

If you check a few threads back, you'll see where Corky instructed me on how to do it.

Follow exactly what he instructed... Pull down HARD! In the inside of the mirror mount, there is a pretty big spring pushing two round knobs that hold the mirror in place.

Just grabbed the handle (with the mirror attached) and pulled down HARD. It will come out.

When it comes off, just twist the old mirror off and put the new one on (I wet mine up with soapy water).

NOTE: Be careful when you putting the new one on. I broke one mirror by accident.

Good Luck

For what it's worth, I found it difficult to exert enough force upward to install the replacement. The solution was a rubber hammer and cation.

Thanks for the advice. I bought a "dismantler" mirror for $20, (MB part), it was perfect. In retrospect, I should have just swapped the mirror and left the mount alone. It does come off if you pull down HARD. It is difficult to reinstall with the mirror in place, so I removed the mirror and used a hammer with the face taped to reseat the mount as I couldn't do it by hand. I then reinstalled the mirror. Sucessful Mission. Thanks for the advice, your forum is great.
