Conversion Of Petrol Engine Into 240d Diesel Engine In The Car Model1975 Version 115
 

DEAR SIR,
I OWN MERCEDES CAR MODEL 1975 (230), ITS PETROL ENGINE HAS BEEN CONVERTED INTO DIESEL ENGINE 240D MODEL 1974. THE CAR CONDITION IS OUTCLASS AND IS VERY WELL MAINTAINED BUT SINCE ITS CONVERSION INTO DIESEL ENGINE THE CAR IS NOT PICKING UP ACCELERATION MORE THAN 70 mph. PLEASE ADVICE WHY THIS PROBLEM IS OCCURING. DOES THE CAR NEEDS OTHER ALTERATIONS AS WELL.

I'm not a diesel expert, but we had a 240D years ago, and it would certainly do better than 70 mph. I would start by checking the fuel and air filters.

i would check the accelerater linkage .be sure you are getting full travel on the injection pump lever.because this was a swap in adjustments may be necessary

Sounds like a fuel delivery issue. Did you add a fuel "return" line? I don't think you are getting enough fuel to the injection pump to support the increased demand that higher speed calls for.

You might want to check the rearend gear ratio on the car. Most of the petro engined Mercedes that I've had experience with have lower gear ratios than the diesels. A normal 240D in the U.S. has a gear ratio of 3.46 whereas the 280CEs have a gear ratio of 3.69. I don't know about 230s.

Yours could possibly have a much lower gear and the diesel just doesn't have the power to push it above 70.

Check the gear ratio by looking at the left hand, lower back edge of the differential, there's a flat spot there and the ratio is stamped into the metal. You generally need to scrape off the dirt and grease to see it.

My daughter's 240D will do well over 70 but is very wound up above that. Hope this helps.
