Help: Euro Headlight Wiper Question
 

I have a 1991 w-124 (300E), American model (spec.)

I have the car in Europe ... and I have recently had the European lights installed.

The Euro-lights look great, and have awesome performance.

I had the Merceder dealer install them (which means that this was likely the FIRST time there monkies ever were in contact with a US Spec. Benz). This became obvious when they said that the entire wiring for the head lights needed to be swapped because of the wattage difference in the Euro-lights. Instead they left the old wiring in place and merely rewired the power via, the battery.

The Euro-wipers look great as well. However, they never finish wiping in the same position. One or the other is pointed up, while the other is in some other position - usually the opposite down position.

I asked the dealer about the problem. Their reply (guess) was that - it was the US spec. wiring and the US switch that is messing with the system - and that would need to be replaced. Really they did not know - but it was an expensive guess.

I have not had them fix the wipers ...yet. I don't think they are correct about the cause of the problem.

As long as you stay with the same wattage bulbs, the wiring is fine and should not need to be wired directly to the battery.

The wipers (I assume you have the euro wipers installed) also work just fine with the U.S. spec wiring. Are you saying the blades park in a different spot every time of just that when they park they are not at the lower edge of the lights but otherwise park in the same (but wrong) spot? If it's the latter, then simply remove the blades and activate the wipers a few times to set the motors at their true park position. Then reinstall the blades in the correct place.

Actually, the wipers park in a different spot all the time --- and they are never uniform between the each of the two wipers

It sounds as if they didn't tighten the nuts securing the wiper motors to the headlights. BTW, the only change in switching from US to Euro wiring for me was rearranging the wiring pins into a 6 socket Euro connector. The H4 and 9004 headlight bulb are still 55 watts, the Fog is still an H3 at 55 watts, all you added was an 8 watt city bulb. No big current drain there! Did they install 85 or 100 watt bulbs? (The British sites state anything over 55 is illegal on there roads as well as over here.)

Check the securing nuts on the motors if it is parking and moving to different patterns every time. If the nuts are loose, I would ask for my money back on the labor, and ask that they explain, using Ohms law, where the extra watts came from that required additional wiring!

The Wiper Phantom Lives On!

All headlight mounting screws are tight and in place. Actually, it all looks like everything is hooked up right ... It's just that the wipers park (both) in a different spot every time (and they do not do this uniformly together).

Any parking mechanism depends on power being supplied to the motor after you turn off the supply. This drives the motor until the wiper breaks the contact by moving into the park zone. I suspect that there is a wrong or missing connection.

I'm not familiar with the wiper system on your car, sometimes the parking works by switching the earth, sometimes the live. If it is earth switching it will not be obvious that there is a missing connection to earth.

Alternatively, I believe the supply to the wipers depends on both the headlamps and the windscreen wipers being activated. It may be that you have live supplies from both of these systems but no permanent live. Therefore, when the headlights and main wipers shut down, there is no live supply to make the headlamp wipers park.
