Water pump changeout, rookie project?

Got a leaky water pump on an 86 560sl. Pretty tight quarters but I can see it dripping under pressure. I've done several searches on the topic but what I really need to know is if this is a project for the neo-beginner? If it requires distributor removal, I think I'll pass. I've done subframe mounts, replaced a catalylist, recovered seats, stuff like that, but I am not really a craftsman.

MB wants $118 for the pump and gasket (pretty reasonable I thought) and I don't mind jumping in but I don't want to be over my head. So far, dealer guoted $650, local indy, $800, will talk with a couple of Euro guys next week.

Your thoughts please?

Thanks.

Thanks, I looked at that...

I was wondering if the SEL and the SL were close enough cousins for the same procdure? You think so?

Thanks.

According to a book I own titled "Mercedes-Benz Production Models Book 1946-1995" by W. Robert Nitske, the 560SEL and the 560SL both have the M117 engine, same bore & stroke & the same displacement.

The power output, compression ratio and torque vary.

No doubt things may be mounted a bit differently in these two cars, but if they both have an M117 engine, I'd say you could take the info posted by the fellow who provided it and get after it.

Hopefully we'll have some more folks chime in here.
