i'm working on an 88 300E a/c system. the air blows cold but when you drive it for approx. 15 minutes or so, the compressor cuts off and it blows outside air. it doesn't cut out however while idling, no matter how long you leave it idling. the outside air temp is broken and reads -3? (the last number isn't readable. will the outside temp switch cut the compressor out?? or is this likely a tensionor problem?? the system has been evacuated and recharged and has a new control switch. and when the compressor cuts off, you can restart the vehicle or remove the fuse and immediately replace it and the compressor starts again. thanks for the help.

Only two or three things can cause this. Loose belt, faulty compressor control unit, or faulty sensor on the rear of the compressor.

If the belt is the least bit loose, start with the tensioner.

thanks for the quick reply. i replaced the tensioner and shock, still doing it. by compressor control unit, do you mean the control module located behind the battery compartment?? if so i've changed it and will move to the switch on the back of the compressor. will the compressor have to be removed to change it?? thanks again.

You need to check and see if there is a signal coming from the rear of the compressor when hot. From your description, probably not. The Freon at least will have to be recovered to do the sensor.
