I was waiting on somebody to call my hand on my first response, but nobody did, so.

If memory serves me well, I think my very first post on this forum was asking if anyone had put a Ford engine in a W124. My frustration with my engine is well documented here. I haven't ruled it out yet, even though I just spent nearly $3000 on a head rework and reman transmission.

With that said, I met a member at the MB Autowerks last Saturday that had done just that. He "engineered" a Ford 302 into a 190. (I think it was a 190, German beer was involved)
Anyway, he had lots of detailed photographs of his project, and I can say that if there is a right way to do it, then he did. There was no jerryrigging involved. When he needed a special part to mate the two, he machined one. He built or modified everything. The result was remarkable! I was duly impressed. But, I was left with the thought of was it worth it ! As Larry said, you better be damn good and have plenty of time and patience, cause from what I saw it's a hellova job! If you think you can just drop in a non MB powertrain, then you've got another thing coming.

In my case, I don't care about resale value. I'll have to keep this car and get my money out of it. And I would rather have it run and be reliable than not.
BTW, it would be hard to sell a MB that doesn't run properly unless you were going to give it away.

And no, I don't think that GM products are any better than MB.

It's just that, I know if there was a problem with the GM engine controls you could get it fixed, and at a reasonable price. This doesn't seem to be so with my 300 SEL.

Here is what it is in. The guy emailed me and said they are working on a supercharger for it. I thought it was a pretty nice looking W123 body car. He said he got the engine for free and the car for $500.

C'mon Guys.......keep an open mind.

If you dont want to do the swap yourself, contact Skip at Excel Automotive in Durham North Carolina. He has done numerous small block into 126 swaps. They all have been very clean swaps. He normally uses tuned port Vette and Camaro engines with the GM tranny.

Since Daimler is now the parent company for DaimlerChrysler, you might be able to reduce the 'blasphemy quotient' by swapping in a Chrysler 4.7sohc, or 5.7 Hemi. If you wnt true to life performance try a 225 slant-six. My.02

I drive a 1985 380SE and I love the car, I have rebuilt the transmission, the front suspension and the LEFT head.

When you say the right head are you refering to this as you stand at the hood?

The timing chain is easy to "roll in" with the help of someone else.

I don't know what you are refering to as far as a "fuel injection pump", these cars have a fuel pump under the fuel tank that rarely goes bad and the CIS injection system is ine of the simplest and most reliable out there.

The 126 body is also a tank and a very safe car. I had a customer who was an epileptic, had been seizure free for 11 years (they wont even give you a drivers licence until you have been seizure free for three years), anyway he was driving down the interstate at aprox. 70 MPH in the left lane, had a seizure stepped on the gas and went off the road to the right. He hit a tree with such force that it threw the engine/transmission assembly out of the car and it landed about 75 feet away. He lived through this incident I beleive because he was

1) In a mercedes
2) In the big 126 body
3) God wanted him around a little while longer.

I think you have a very good car and I wouldn't touch it if I were you.

P.S.

As someone who has rebuilt the MB tranny's and the GM 700R4
I'll tell you the MB tranny is much better engineered and built.

I thinking of placing a Chevy 502 crate engine in my 190E 2.3. I've been told it's a perfect fit, even the auto trans bellhousing bolts up. I'm looking for a GMC 6-71 supercharger to fit this engine. If anyone has one lying in their garage, please send an e-mail.

Have a great day,
It should be okay, Larry. I plan to leave the stock open differential and tires on the car. Wheelspin should serve as a safety valve. In any event, I find it hard to believe that a 190E's transmission can't handle 500 ft/lb of torque. I just hope the stock hood will work.

oy. you know. i've been thinking...i think I'll swap out one or both of the M119s for a 5.0 out of a Mustang. after all, they ARE cheaper motors.

Better yet, we should see if one of the Gullwing boys would be willing to swap in a SBC. LOTS more power than those dinky 50 year old 3 liter slant sixes.
