Supercharger Oil Change

I would like to change the supercharger oil in my wifes 00 C230. The only info I can find so far is that it is "filled for life" and only has a fill/level port. I can't find a drain on it anywhere so I'm assuming I will have to suck out the old oil.

I am looking for someone who can help me with any information they have on this process because I would like to do it. Do any of you techs have any experience with this? My service advisor qouted me $55.00 for 4 oz. of the oil. Not a cheap oil change, but if done every 50k miles, and gives me years of trouble free service, and of course gives me that nice warm fuzzy feeling, than it's worth it.

Thanks in advance all,

Dale

This info concerns the Eaton supercharger and may not be correct for yours.
My owners manual states that the oil needs changing every 36,000 miles. It requires a special synthetic and I think mine was about $8 for four ounces from GM. It took 8 oz. It has to be sucked out of the level hole.

I would also wait until the supercharger is ice cold before changing the oil, as opening the fill/level port on a sealed system will reward you with a hot geyser of oil, not unlike the results obtained when popping the radiator cap on a hot, pressurized, cooling system.

Thanks Stephen but my owners manual nor ALLDATA gives me any information on it. I was qouted $150.00 from my service advisor to change it but I would rather do it myself, not just because of money but I like to learn as much as I can about my vehicles.

The W202 M111 supercharged engine uses the Eaton M62 supercharger. The 62 refers to it's air capacity.

The new AMG cars do not use these models. These use IHS units, as they are more durable.

I haven't done it yet, still trying to find time. I do know that it has to be sucked out which isn't a problem. I'll let you know after I do it which will hopefully be within the next several weeks.

If you click here theres some good info at the bottem of the page on our eatons. I see that it claims to have "self contained lubrication" but after searching all over, I dont see anywhere that states that we need to change this lubrication and/or why would we need to ?

how many psi are you getting out of yours ? I used to get 10 and now im only getting 7, I thought that the drop in tempuratures since winter might have effected that, which it does to superchargers, but a whole 3spi when you only have 10 to start with, im thinking my clutch might be going, any idea how to diagnose this electromagnetic clutch we have ?

I don't have a boost gauge on it so I have no idea what kind of boost it's making, nor have I had any problems with it. As far as your 3 psi drop goes, who knows without getting into it. could be a leaky boost line to the gauge, detecting detonation, on and on. I would assume that if the clutch was slipping it would trip a code, but then again maybe not..........As you can tell I'm not an expert on these units and seeing as how I haven't had to troubleshoot mine for any problems my knowledge level remains low.

I have a fully programable ecu and have tuned it at the dyno several times, so its definetly tuned and not detonating (dont ask about my last engine) ... Ive taken the pipes off and put them back on several times securly, still reading the same boost levels. It is either the weather or the clutch... either or, there both bad... either or atleast i have boost

I'm going to clean my intercooler out soon enough, i doubt a dirty intercooler is robbing me of 3psi though...

sounds like you've got quite the setup. What kind of car do you have and what kind of programmable ECU are you using. Sounds sweet....

If it ain't broke don't fix it!

I am all for preventive maintenance and as many here know, an oil change maniac, but this regards ENGINE oil. ENGINE oil is subject to all sorts of contamination from the combustion process. Changing ENGINE oil is the only way you have to clean out this contamination.

The oil in your supercharger is NOT subject to such contamination, thus the sealed for life recommendation is very valid.

If there is a way to check to see that it still has the correct amount, then check it, see that it's full and be happy.

Good luck,
