One of the best looking hi-tech cars ever built!! Only time will tell if its as good as a Mercedes should be.

Hell man, if you can afford it don't hesitate, buy it. Change those 16 inch OEM alloys to some 17/18 inch (add chrome tip performance exhaust) from either AMG, Brabus, Carlsson or Lorinser ASAP. They do nothing for the car!

No question that 2000 S-Class is a leader in luxury sedan market. Hi-tech, safe and great performance(S500). I think the only let down of the car is the plastic parts used in the interior, and the visible springs for trunk. So, don't expect the "richness" of leather/wood/suede in W140 S-Class to be found in W220 S-Class. Hopfully MB will address that problem when the new CL-Class comes out.

P.S. It's really sad to see that even E320 has better quality parts(if not better, at least looks richer) in the interior than W220 S-Class........

Happy Motoring....

You don't think that the 2000 S500 has nice wood and leather ???
I own a 86' 420 SEL, do you think I would be going down in terms of quality if I got the new S-class ???

Thanks

If I confused you, my apology

Actually what I am saying is that the plastic parts in W220 is not as nice(both feel and look) as my W140. Not to mention W126. I think W126 although not as solid/heavy/hi-tech as W140, is the nicest S-Class ever made.

You should go see a W220 in person. Feel the plastic used in the interior, open up the boot, and go back to a 1999 W140, and try to feel the plastic(usually lower part of front power seats) and compare. Those plastic used in W220 is no better than the one you will find in the New Grand Cherokee, and definitely not up to par with Lexus LS400. See one in person, compare them all(includes any Dodge/Chrysler/Ford/GM luxury cars) and you should know what I am trying to say....

Again, sorry if I confuse you.

Happy Motoring...

We have had some good times with those new S-class cars already (as expected). On the first one we got in, the video screen took a dump. Had it not been under warranty, it'd have been an $8,000 part!! On another car, the front air valve for the suspension let go and the car dropped to its knees we mainly stood there laughing at it. Anyhow, my advice, search the ends of the earth for a '99 S320. In my opinion, that's the best of the current S-class. If you're dying for a 2000 model, wait until they work some more bugs out of them then make your move. But the car does kind of remind me of a video game

1st impression - had opportunity to drive a new S class from Vancouver to Abbotsford on the highway(about 60 miles). Fast car. Great handling. Dashboard died 3 times along the way, and had to pull over and restart twice. The third time, did a rolling restart (I know -- dangerous). I agree with Akry, parts appear to be more middle end -- ie. grain pattern on the dash, seat leather & others. Stereo was a bit gimicky, but then you don't really have to play with all those options.

2nd impression - pulled up to a red light next to what appeared to be a black C280 (in was night time) in my SL500. Didn't look twice. Started to go (not really hard, but above normal), the C280 (sic) pulled in front of me, shocked, of course my first reaction is to DOWNSHIFT!! The C280 (at this point I think it's a C36 or C43) still stays ahead of me up to about 120 K, then I start to pull ahead. That's when I noticed the headlights in the rear view mirror and realized it was a new S class. I think the styling in the side and rear of the car is quite disappointing.

IMHO.

With my 92 300SE I'm still suffering and it only has 49K on it. That S class didn't get it close until about '95 and then still not all the bugs out. With over 300 new patents on the 2000 S I think I would wait a couple of years or find a used exec car with a 100,000 mile full warranty! Good luck. With a video at close to $8k imagine what just one claim would return on an extended warranty cost...you would be way ahead!
