heater - a/c blower intermittent

Need some help locating the "Electronic Blower Regulator" on my 95-E320. Yesterday the blower stopped for about 5 minutes and then started for a second, then stopped for about 5 minutes and started for a second...get the pattern. Its cold out here so I need to 1) check the fan 2) check the regulator (which is what I suspect). I am just hoping its not the pushbutton control.

The CD (figure 26 of Relay and Control Modules Locations) shows it behind the centre ducts, so how do I access this component? Any help / thoughts are welcome.

Ron

Ron: Before doing anything else, check your blower fuse.
The 2 little screws holding the fuse have a tendency to work themselves loose.
It is located on top of the left/front wheel tower, outside the main fuse box in a separate fuse holder.. There are 2 screws holding the fuse and other screws holding the fuse holder. Make sure you have an excellent contact there.

Jack: Thanks for the information. My fuse screws were at best snug. I tightened them anyways. Blower motor appears to be the culprit. On this run, it stalled while under auto (temp up in car) but pressing the fast speed now made it turn with a bit of howling while it got up to speed. Sounds like brushes and bearings to me. Your comments.

A quick test to determine if your push button control is going out on you is to remove the wood trim surrouding it: 2 phillips screws at base of wood just above stereo.

Then remove the 6 phillips screws holding the unit in. When it's not working pull it slightly out and knock on the bottom of unit with your knuckles. If it starts to come on again after a few knocks or so, you have a loose solder in there somewhere that might be repairable.

If not ACC unit, then look to blower motor, then regulator.

It is very likely that the brushes in the motor are worn out.

Good luck,

heater blower

I tend to agree with Larry, but I need to get into the console area anyway, specifically to find out why the ashtray light and lighter flash when lowering the ashtray. When the lighter lightbulb is not working, neither is the cigarette lighter. Bad wire I presume.

Anyways...will remove the covers and attempt to test the blower motor and console switches. Applying 12v to the blower from the regulator leads will not destoy anything I presume?

Ron

BTW..thanks Larry and pmizell. All suggestions greatly appreciated.

access to the blower motor

I'm a little confused on how to access the blower motor. Is it gained through the dash, or can I get access to it from outside. ie by removing the windshield wiper ass'm. I'm probably looking at and R&R. If anybody has done this recently (and by the board it looks like its a typcical w124 problem), I would appreciate their input.

Ron

Thanks in advance.

Ron:

This topic has been discussed extensively so a search would yield much information.

Essentially, you'll have to remove:

1. window trim (one on each side) pull straight out
2. firewall partition (removal of trim will reveal the screws you need to take out)
3. rubber insulation piece that runs along the partition
4. air inlet cover, 4 screws I think
5. removal of inlet cover will reveal the wiper assy
6. remove wiper assy -- 4, 10mm bolts hold this on, 2 on left side
1 on either side of the transmission oval; unplug power
7. once wiper assy out of the way blower motor box will be fully
accessible
8. 7 or 8 clips hold blower motor box cover on, unclip them pull off top of box
9. retaining (metal) strap, unclip
10. remove ground and 12v wiring to blower motor
11. pull out blower motor

Seems a bit daunting the first time you do this, and you'll wonder how you'll get it all back together, but just keep in mind what goes where and the steps you took to remove.

And don't forget to plug back in the wiper assy power supply.

Gluck

update

I want to thank pmizell on his support for the removal of the fan blower and if anyone is interested and needs to access their blower motor on a w124, try looking under the author "anthonyb" for another procedure.

Status: the blower is now sitting in my hand and it took less than 1-1/2 hours to remove. Bearings and brushes for sure and maybe I need to get the commutator rebuilt, looks to have worn about 1/16". Total cost locally is $40 for the brushes and bearing, about $100 for the commutator. Canadian dollars actually.

I will get it repaired tommorrow.....hopefully the install will be just as quick. Only managed to lose one screw and on screw-nut.

Thanks for all your help.

Ron

PS..I'll try an remember to take pictures during the installation. Completely forgot about it during the dissassembly.

job done

Closing off this thread, the repair was a success. Managed to have the blower rebuilt for $60.00. Most of the problem was corrossion from water and brushes that where shot. All told spend $60.00 (Can) to rebuild. Cost me $50.00 to replace the air filters. Wiper mehanism was cleaned and regreased at the same time.

Pictures....I forgot. Went together so fast it was comical.

Thanks everyone for your helpful comments.

Ron
