Cold Feet
 

Like many others, I learned from trial and error (and posts here) that the heat to the rear in my 560SEL comes from under the seats, not the center consol. Great. But why do I get cold air in the driver's footwell and for the left rear passenger but plenty of warm air everywhere else?

It just dawned on my that I've been getting out of the car with colder feet than I had getting in every day this week.

I am not an expert nor am I familiar with your particular model.

Merc heating is normally controlled independently for each side.

The control wheel activate a potentiometer which in turn via the control circuit drives one element of the 'duo valve' which allows more or less water (at engine operating temp) through the heater matrix.

I drive an 'old' 230 TE and the driver side heater control is lazy and I often have to kick it into action by winding the control wheels on both sides from stop to stop until it eventually kicks in.

I have promised myself to strip out the control board and give the potentiometers a squirt of pot cleaner and lube - but you know how it is - there are just so many things to do and so little time;-)

I am sure an expert will pop up and do better for you.

Have you figured this out yet? I ask because now that I am up in the single digit temps, and below, I'm finding my feet to be a little cold. The passenger side footwell is nice and toasty but the driver's side is suitable for hanging meat. If I had a nice warm pair of Sorels I probably wouldn't whine, but I only have tenny runners and combat boots.

Hopefully you've found a quick fix because it is a little too cool to hang out from under the dash trying to figure it out, especially since I have no garage to work in. I learned last weekend that you lose the fine motor skills quickly at sub-zero temps :eek:

What a PITA not having a place to work out of the weather.

Port Huron is only 6 hours or so from me. Come on down, use the garage and the small but effective kerosene heater. Shoot, i might even feed you a meal. What's your preference--Hamburger Helper or Tuna Helper? I'll see if i can round up a little guacamole so we can call it California Helper. All kidding aside, it's a humble place but you would be a welcome guest.
