radar detectors vs. radar jammers

I want some kind of radar protection for my car but I'm confused by all the different options. Is valentine one the best detector? or is there something better. And do jammers only work on laser? Open for suggestions.

Jammers and/or detectors are only illegal in CA., OK., MN., VA. and NE. Jammers jam everything in addition to radar. Many companies, such as RMR, sell combination units that do both detecting and jamming. However, nothing will give you any protection against being paced, which is how most highway LEO's will catch you. Many LEO's are equipped with radar detector detectors as well, and [insert supreme being of choice] help you if they catch you with one in any of the aforementioned states. Having said that, many years ago I gave up the practice of trying to gain the the extra hour on road trips by speeding. Now, I pack sandwiches instead of stopping to eat to gain it. Works just as well and I enjoy tremendously low insurance rates as a result of my spotless record, in addition to saving all of the other monies involved.

So, in short, my advice would be to choose neither, obey posted limits, and pack your lunch!

... another view

Well, I've been using radar detectors for 10 years now and have saved much $$$. I am an aggressive driver that prefers the long way if the road is truly a 'road'. I tend to live near classic country roads which the local sheriff uses radar (K and Ka band). Also, the California Highway Patrol has been authorized to use radar on certain freeways/highways near by as well.

I used an early model Valentine 1 that worked great; I liked the front/rear antenna feature which provides "threat direction". The V1 needed to be repaired and Valentine was going to charge me 200 USD. Even though it would be upgraded with Laser detection, I passed. Based on test reports from RadarTest.com (http://www.radartest.com/DS4HEM.html) I chose the Escort Passport 8500.

On a recent 1400 mile trip, through several states, the 8500 paid for it's self many times over. As I use the detector on the streets in my neighborhood, I've noticed that though the 8500 does not have a rear antenna, it has detected signals from the rear quite well. All in all, I'm very happy with the 8500.

My two cents ...

I have both the Escort 8500 and the Valentine One. Both are good detectors, but I give the Valentine the edge with the Bogey Counter and Arrows. It's just a better package.
Never used a jammer, how do you know if it's actually working? The big Auto Mags do not give them high marks.

I have an 8500 and a Jammer. My prevoius detector was a Bell and I could "piggy back" the jammer using just one power cord.
Escort's power set up does not allow this.

I have tested the jammer on the occaisional roadside fixed radar which displays the drivers speed. I have seen this display actually go blank when I approach!

Given only one option, I'd spring for a good detector. I highly recommend the 8500.
