Question I can't be the only one in the world

I just bought a 1983 Mercedes 300D-turbo diesel. As sure as I'm sitting here, the previous owner warned me, don't slam the glove compartment shut, which I did, but I didn't slam... I see that the latch has been cleanly broken off and I don't see any other pieces in the car, but obviously the latch is broken and the glove box door is hanging. I can't believe that the gentle shove I gave it screwed it up, but you know, it's entirely possible and I imagine this has plagued other owners. Anybody - how to fix?????

sounds like it was broken before and the xowner somehow got it to stay closed.
Just get a new catch.
