how to determine fault codes 98 C230???

I am new to Benz. I am buying a 1998 C230 w/58k miles in a few days. What is the process of determining fault codes and do i need a specific diagnostic tool. I have never used electronic diagnostic tools before but i can turn a wrench. I have a 1986 porsche 944 Turbo that I get greasy and bloody with time to time.

To read engine codes you would need an ODB2 scan tool.
For the other systems you need a scan tool designed for MB's. Like the AST Retriever OR the Baum I-scan 2000.

Is the CE light on? If so, make sure you find out what is triggering it prior to buying the car.

No lights on just wondering for when it does.

If memory serves, there was a dicussion that mentioned that MB now sells a "lite" version of their diagnostic code reading unit, under pressure to allow indie shops to read codes, and I think the price is about $10K US for the "cheap" version...

(Most dealers charge a flat rate for reading codes, something like .5 to 1.0 hrs. Seems to be much cheaper than having your own diagnostic reader...)
