I am going to check and adjust where necessary the shims in my 16V. Is a regular feeler guage OK, or did MB use a special tool?

Also, is there any performance/noise benefits of keeping the gaps at the lower end of the spec. gaps when cold, or maybe even a little lower? What about the racing versions, did they have the same gap specs?, or was there some emission control issues involved in the gaps being set at the factory specified level?

I usually do set mine up a little on the tight side, but do adhere to factory specs. I just like them to run a little quieter. There is a sheet for the adjustment procedure complete with instructions and pics in the CD rom. We carry them in the partsshop. I suggest you get it if you haven't done this before. (Both cams have to be taken out and re-torqued in)
