Shift Lock
 
My 99, ML430, 33,000 miles, and out of warranty has a problem with the shift lock. I am able to shift from Park to any other position without the key in the ignition or my foot on the brake.
Is there anything I can check without taking it to the dealer? The last thing replaced under warranty was the transfer case. Is there any elecrical connection near there that may not have been reconnected?

It's possible that something in the shifter is broken, but not very likely. Replacing the transfer case doesn't require messing with the shifter, so it's unlikely it was damaged during the repair work. There's also a cable to the trans that's adjustable that may have been disconnected. If the problem started following the TC replacement bring it back and ask them to re-check their work. It only takes a few minutes to check this adjustment. If they're professionals they'll do the right thing. How is it possible that your out of warranty? Did you take delivery late in '98? Even if that's the case MB can "goodwill" the repair, but you may have to push the issue a bit.

The ML was delivered on 9/22/98. I don't know how long I've had the problem.

You're out of warranty on time, but in on mileage. You're a prime candidate for MB goodwill, especially if you've done all your scheduled maintenance at that dealer. The service manager has a certain amount of goodwill repairs he can authorize, so they take care of their regular clients first. Good luck
