Troubleshooting Turbocharger on 603.970 engine
 

Seems like my 350 SDL is a bit slower these days ... no oil burning, great starting, etc.

Removed intake tract and desludged 6 months ago ... ugly mess - hope it is related to the early demise of the engines.

Without putting a pressure guage on, what can I do to determine if the turbocharger is working properly ... sounds like there are cars with turbos running at 100% and others at far lower efficiencies ... adjustments include the Alda, right? Check lines for oil and crud. How to check in a binary sense?

Go to the parts store and purchase a cheap boost pressure gauge that has good reading down low. I think you are looking for 5-7 psi. If it is there, you have a fueling problem. It isn't uncommon to see clogged filters. (Your car has 3 fuel filters if you count the one in the tank) Also, I have upped the mixutre of the anaroid many times after a few years.

CD calls for testing in three places ... looks like should "T" (although CD says "Y" it in) ... do I use enough hose to run in through window while driving, then?

Can you refer me to procedure for adjusting the aneroid or reference the CD in some way?

I may be imagining the reduced acceleration ... I have read in several threads the car should do 0-60 in around 12 seconds ... mine is more like about 18 seconds ...

My '87 had the same symptoms. Real slow... about 18-19 seconds 0-60. Found a plugged vacuum line (crud) to the fuel enrichment (ALDI?). Now it is back to 12-13 seconds 0-60.

OK, haven't gotten a gauge, yet, but did check all the vacuum lines for blockages ... no blockages ... had some extra nylon hose on hand so replaced 'em.

I replaced fuel filters a couple of years ago .... will give it a shot in a few days.

George - - Why not change the fuel filters AND the air filter. It's the easiest and cheapest way to begin. Maybe you're be lucky . I believe that it is what a diesel shop would do first when there is a power problem. Good Luck and let us know how you solve the problem :)
