Help! Outside Air Thermometer Fading
Have any of you seen this?
The outside air thermometer digits are fading in and out. The best way to describe it is like a digital watch running low on batteries. The background light is working ok though. The digits fade in and out and sometime stays normal for a few hours at a time. I am having the speedo cable replaced tomorrow and would like to get some ideas before so that I know where to begin. Any ideas?? Thanks! 94' e320 coupe Mingson

i've had that problem since i got my car. i've eliminated the thermistor as the problem since i've replaced it. it could be the LCD unit that plugs behind the cluster. mine seems to be affected by temperature and humidity. when it's wet it starts to fade out. i was going to try and get at the LCD unit to clean the contacts but i had problems pulling the cluster out and haven't had another go at it.
let us know if you find anything out - this is one annoying gremlin. i'm not ready to spring for $200 to get a new LCD unit though...

I also suspect it is due to temperature and humidity. After driving for a hlaf an hour or so the digits start fading back into view and eventually looks normal! I will have the cluster off tomorrow or next week and will keep you guys posted on any progress.
Annoying!!

try some electronic contact cleaner on the pins. i don't even know what they look like but there was at least one other post that described this symptom. my car spent the first 8 yrs of its life in florida and the jersey shore where the humidity may have been a factor.

I finally nailed this sucker - short story is that my fuse #5 blew:
fuse #5 The guy that helped me out pulled and replaced fuse #6 which controls the buzzer and the LCD temp among other things and just twirled #5. Got it running but later on I saw that #5 was sparking so I replaced that too. This morning my TEMP LCD which had been faltering with the spring weather was on solid!

Great Thanks! I'll try it. When I had the cluster out, the thermometer contacts looked clean and untouched by the elements.
