Center bearing replacement..Any special tools needed??? I searched..
 

I'm going to attack my driveline vibes tomorrow.. I'm armed with both flex discs, and hardware.. A center bearing, and center bearing support.. I know that the driveshaft pieces must be put back together with the marks lined up..I also know about the direction of the flex discs..

I have a 14MM hex key.. What othere specal tools will I need???
Is the bearing pressed on?? Will I need to take it to a shop to have it removed, and re-installed???

If it spins freely should I leave it alone????

I read for about an hour yesterday.. Still not sure about removing the bearing, and slipping on the new one.. The service manual calls for special tools, but it always does..

My flex disc bolts take a 10 mm hex driver - torqued to 40 Nm / 30 ft lbs (IIRC). Not sure a hex key is a god tool to use here, torque is important and the old bolts might be tight if previously servcied with an air tool.

For the bearing, "special" tools are not required - a workbench vice, punch, and hammer. You'll destroy the bearing in the process, but it doesn't matter since you're replacing it. There are dust sheilds around the bearing. Loosen them with the punch and then beat the bearing off with the punch (beat around the base of the bearing in a circular motion, may require a good deal of force, but it will come off). lightly grease and Evenly tap the new bearing in place with the punch. Lightly grease the mount and push it onto the bearing.

If you didn't get a new rubber dust boot, be careful removing the old one as it may tear.

My bearing may well have been original at 250kmi. It was a little loose, but did nothing to change the performance of the driveshaft. The flex discs were older too, but still fine. They wear out from the inside-out so if you see threads or cracks they need replacement. Bolts, washers, and nuts for the flex discs are not supposed to be reused.

I was just wondering how many bearings, what they look like and where they are located on the driveshaft for a 190E. I have the manual, and I would like to replace my bearings since I can hear one of them, or at least that's what I think it is, however, looking at the service manual, the pictures are kind of bad quality and when looking under the car, I have no idea what is where, or even if the bearing is there. Can someone shed some light for me on this? I have no rubber boots on the shaft, it goes from the tranny to the differential, it's made up of two parts joined with the two C shaped arms holding a disc, is that the bearing? The Flex discs look very good except one of them seems to have some kind of fabric trapped under the bolts, not sure what that is, but the point is I see nothing there resembling a bearing.

There should be NO fabric on the flex discs, if threads are showing replace it. Two C shaped arms - not sure what you mean ??? The two shafts join under the exhaust heat shield. Under that heat shield the center support for the driveshaft. In that center support is the bearing, behind metal dust shields. There is only one bearing.

I did a complete rebuild today except for the U-joint.. All of the vibes are gone.. I'll do a complete write up for the forum, when I get a few minutes..

BTW I have a front, and rear flex disk that look to be in perfect condition if anyone is interested..Pay for shipping, and they are yours.. The center bearing, and support were my problem..

maybe that's where the noise is coming from, not the bearing but the flex disc
