I have a '82 300SD with 100k. How long should it take for the oil pressure to come up when you start? Also after the car has sat awhile and I take off the oil filter cover to change the oil the canister is empty. I changed the 2 O-rings but it still drains away. Any suggestions?

Oil pressure should rise up to 3bar (45psi) a couple seconds after you start the car and should rise immediately upon acceleration after the engine has reached a normal operating temp of 80 degrees celsius. At idle during normal operating temp, the needle should hover around 1.5 bar on the gauge. Also, you mentioned about changing your oil. Which o-rings did you replace? You only need the copper one for the drain plug and the big rubber one for the filter canister cover. The metal one can be thrown into your "spares" bin. After you change the oil when you start the car for the first time with the fresh oil in it, it might take a few seconds for the gauge to register 3bar. Once it reaches 3bar, you can shut down the engine, wait a couple of minutes, then check the oil. Changing the two little o-rings on the bottom of the oil filter housing lid shaft is needed when they become brittle and hard. At least every 100K. And when you lift this lid, the oil is supposed to drain out of the housing and in to the oil pan. This should be done before draining the oil out of the pan (or sucking it up out of the dipstick: except in Denver).
Now the oil pressure as stated should peg the oil gauge needle within a few seconds when starting the engine. ------------------ |

Thanks for the replys. The O-rings I refer to are the ones on the bottom of the tube that is part of the oil filter canister top. If I am correct they seal the oil drain hole for the filter housing so when you pull up on the lid the oil drains away. My problem is that I think the oil is still draining after the car sits for a while (several hours). Is there any other way the oil can escape the filter housing when the engine is off?
