My 93 300E 2.8 needs a new oxygen sensor. The dealer wants over $300 for part/installation. I've asked for a price quote, now I'd like to find out what it takes to do the replacement. I know it's under the engine near the exhaust outlet. But how is the replacement done? Can the sensor be removed with a socket wrench? Any computer inputs needed afterward?

If you want to change it yourself you'll need a open end wrench and preferably your car on a lift, because you may need a lot of leverage to get it off. I'm sure the parts shop has the part. I recently changed mine, I used a generic 3 wire bosh unit from a local foreign auto parts store(didn't know about this site then). Clipped the wires from the old one and soldered them to the new one. I'm not sure what has to be reset.

The computer only has to be reset if the "Check Engine" mil is illuminated.

I hav'nt done it myself but I was told to buy a late model Mustang sensor and solder my wires to it. Price for the Mustang unit is supposed to be around $30.00-$40.00 if I remember right.

Try disconneting the battery neg. terminal for 3 to 5 mintues to see if you can reset the check engine lite.

If you'd like I can send you all the info on replacemnt and purchase of the Ford O2 sensor.
It works quite well and is most definitly a DIY job. pocket the 300 bucks!

I replaced the O2 sensor in my 92 190E2.6 with the Bosch sensor from a 5.0 Mustang. The Bosch number was 13953 from Autozone and cost $39.00. Just cut the terminals from my old sensor and solder to the wires on the new sensor. Works great. I used an open end wrench to remove the sensor and install teh new one. I think it was 22mm, but when you by the new sensor, just find the size wrench in the store that will fit. Good luck.

The Mustang O2 sensor has 3 leads -- 2 white and a black. My 93 300E 2.8 has 4 leads -- an additional gray lead -- just to make things interesting. I also found te Mustang sensor for just under $40, but it won't work in my car. Ideas?
