check vavle in oil filter assembly

I have a question I hope someone can help me with. I get drive train noise on startup and someone has suggested I check the check valve in the oil filter assembly. I looked at my CD and don't see it anywhere, does anyone know if my car 1992 300e has an oil check valve used to keep the oil in top end?

Thanks,
Joel

Here is a link to the thread that discusses the oil filter housing check valve. I'm not sure if the M103 has this same type of check valve but would be interested iin knowing because my 260e sometimes makes racket on startup too.

Joel/John:

I too have a 103 motor and became curious about this check valve thing in the oil filter housing.

I just got done reviewing my MB CD-Rom - service task 18-110 - Remove and install oil filter.

If you have access to a 124 or 126 CD-Rom, you might want to take a look at this. The task 18-110 will be for the 103 motor.

There is no check valve shown, but there is an OIL PRESSURE SENSOR and an electrical connection that attaches to the rear of the sensor. Ths sensor seems to connect more to the rear of the oil filter housing.

I purchased my MB used in '97 with 35,000 miles. It now has 96,000 miles and I've experienced no noise whatsoever at start-up; however, I've noticed that it always takes 2-3 secs. before the oil pressure gauge needle rises and this situation only occurs when the engine is stone cold..ie..first start of the day. I use only Mann, Mahle-Knecht; Hengst or on occassion, dealer filters. I live in a warm place and have experimented with both 20W-50 and 10W-40 conventional oil. Same situation, irrespective of oil weight.

After 2-3 secs., the oil pressure rises quickly to 3 BAR and stays there. Once warmed up, the oil pressure rises quickly to 3 bar after the engine rpm is around 1500. I've never experienced problems with fluctuating gauge readings, lifter tick or other noise(s) that would come as the result of faulty oil pressure.

My cam lobes show no signs of galling, nor are there any signs indicative of faulty oil pressure.

I may replace this oil pressure sensor after cleaning the electrical connections simply because I've read here that many 103 owners experience an immediate jump to 3 bar when the engine is started up cold first thing in the morning.

No valve

Hi all,

Based on what been posted and my CD-Rom I don't think the 103 has the check valve.

Would anyone know, I know it's hard without hearing the noise yourself, have any ideas on what the rapping noise would be caused by?

I really only notice at start up, it lasts longer on some days than others, but goes away when warm.

Thanks,
Joel

My 92 300e (2.6) is also experiencing this *exact* issue. It seems to exist reguardless of what oil brand/viscosity I use in the car. I Just changed the oil a few days ago, and did notice a small connector/sensor piece that appears to be directly behind the oil filter housing (it appears to be attached to the housing itself). Could this be this mystery part? Would this be the "valve" or the "sensor" (is there a difference?)? My "tapping" lasts for approx 1-2 seconds, primarily when the engine is cold and is turned on. My feeling is that oil is somehow being "starved" from the top-end initially during those first few seconds, hence the noise. Is this "Check valve" that has been mentioned - is it designed to hold the oil (ie. make a supply of oil available for the top-end, after shut-down)? If so, i am guessing this is failing on my car .. any suggestions? is this a costly repair? (*crosses fingers*)

Thanks all.. input is welcome on this!

i think i might be wrong
but the check valve is in the oil filter. if you car has the spin on type like my 92 190e 2.6. i've been looking for the upgrade filter
that won't let the oil back to the motor when you shut the car off.
so that when you first start your car in the cold morning it won't make the sound it makes for a few seconds.

Filter

JOSEV, Based on my CD looks as though you are correct. However, based on the description in the CD it looks as though the valve in the filter is inteded to prevent backwash of dirty oil rather than retention in top end.

I think the bottom line is that the 103 does not have the check valve.

Wish it did, my car rapps like hell sometimes when warming up. I am also consuming oil, wondering if warn vavle seal could contribute to rapp.

noise on start

could very well be timing chain tensioner

Thanks devil

I had not thought of the timing chain tensioner. Does not look like a tough fix, I was contimplating replacing anyway.

Thanks for the note,
Joel
