blower motor wont blow air
I just got a new blower motor for my 190 e 2.3 and installed it. It wont blow any air through the vents and I know its working because I tested it before I put everything back together. All that I hear is something opening and closing. I also checked to see if I installed the fan backwards but that wasnt true. No fuses are blown either. Can someone please help me???

If the squirel cages are spinning, the air has to go somewhere. The blower housing distributes through the center console and to the left and right vents. The left and right vents are supplied through plastic hoses from the console. Check the hoses from under the removable under dash panels.

Is the problem no air from the vents, or the motor not coming on when it should?

The problem is no air from the vents.

If the squirrel cages aren't oriented the same way the original blower cages were oriented, you will get very little airflow through the vents. You have to look at the curve of the blades, and make sure the airflow is from the center of the cage straight out towards the evaporator. It can be installed so the air blows against the bottom of the housing (I did this once).
Other possibilities include blockage against the evap or the air inlet, HVAC hoses (but unlikely they would all be disconnected) or a vacuum flap problem (but some should default open). If the blower motor is all you worked on, the problem is probably somewhere there... -anthony |

If you hit Defrost, do you get air to the windshield. If so, you may have a problem with the vacuum system. If not, you probably have the squirrel cages turned around as anthonyb suggests.

Any possibility the levers that shut off the center and/or side vnts are in the closed position?

One questions:
1. Did you think you needed the new blower motor because no air was coming out the vents? - If yes and the new motor tested good but now does not function and you have verified that the fuses are good, then you most likely have a bad electrical ignition connector. The interesting thing is that, with this problem, you will indeed hear the vent dampers turning when you press buttons but you will not hear the fan motor. They operate independant of one another. So, provided you hooked up the motor and the connections are sound then I would strongly lean toward the ignition fault. Also, if the original motor was thought to be bad, test it now. If it rotates then I'll bet you my benz that the ignition is the issue. |

First of all, the old blower motor I had in my car kept on blowing fuses everytime I would turn it on. So I took the car apart to get to the blower. Then made sure the wires were hooked up correctly and tested it. It still did not work and it blow another fuse.
So I decided to buy a new motor. I installed the new one and tested it. It worked fine and didnt blow any fuses. Then when i put everything back together, I tested it and I felt no air coming through any vents. I did hear noises when I pushed the buttons, but I dont know what they are. Could the blower be in backwards? Could there be something clogging the vents? Thanks |

If you are certain that the motor is rotating then I will have to agree with a previous post that the squirl cages are backwards. But, I think you should cut to the chase and open everthing up again, turn on the fan and look at it to see if it is rotating. If not, turn it on and put a volt meter across the terminals and look for a voltage drop. If there is no voltage then the problem is either the ignition switch, fan switch, fuses, or wiring.

If you got the cheaper motor where the fan cages are transferred from the old motor to the new one, sure, you could have put them on backwards, there is a left and a right side. It would be difficult to put the motor itself in wrong, could be done though. You would have noticed that the electrical connectors were on the wrong side when installing the new one.
Maybe turn the fan on and see if possibly the air is blowing out the windshield side. Gilly

How about a quick and dirty? Flip the hot and the ground so the motor runs backwards and the cages are then OK.
I almost felt like I should get a different user name to suggest this.

The wire ends are opposites of each other, in other words one wire end is male, the other is female. To change the wire ends around is doable, but if you go back into this that far, you may as well just pull the blower motor and switch the fans to the correct side.

Maybe this isn't on the exact topic, but you say you hear the fan but nothing is coming out of the vents .... could you also have problems with the control flaps/ vacuum controls?
Also, could you hold a flame infront of one of the vents and see if the flame is being sucked into the vent instead of being blown away? Just a thought. Haasman
