Instrument Cluster Removal -- Help!
 

The odometer needs a tune-up on my '80 300SD. I have searched the archives, and feel confident that I can make this repair.

My problem? I cannot find specific, detailed instructions for the removal of the instrument cluster.

I do not want to risk messing up this vehicle, but it seems every post having to do with guage or lighting problems simply state "remove the instrument cluster".

Can some kind soul help this old man out with clear, detailed instructions? Also, does my oil pressure guage have an oil line running to it? How do I remove and replace the oil line, if I have one, without causing a leak?

It should pull straight out. You either need to try to get behind it and push or make up some "hooked" rods that you can slip in between the cluster and the housing surrounding it. You should be able to pull it out a little then reach in behind it and undo the speedo cable and then the oil pressure line. Use a "backup" wrench when loosening the oil pressure line. Not too sure about replacing the line.

To avoid stretching the speedo cable (resulting in a bouncy needle) I suggest that you remove the underdash panel and unscrew the speedo cable before moving the cluster. There may be plastic a/c ducting that can be removed to make access easier. An alternative is to undo the speedo cable from the transmission under the car first, then you can pull the cluster with plenty of play in the cable.

the cluster can be removed by pulling at the left side just there besides the left turn signal and at the rightturn signal level with the fingers pull equal or paralel . the oil pressure gauge needs a 10m.m. wrench.

for better space you can remove the stering wheel. prying out the horn pad you will find a allen 10mm. the stering wheel needs to pull to get out.

What kind of "tune-up" does your odometer need?

The odo only works intermitently. I intend to repair it using the technique described in the archive -- stop the potmetal gear from turning on the shaft.
My problem is that I had needed instructions on removing the cluster so that I could take the odometer assembly out.

I appreciate all the suggestions and help from the forum members. The right place with the correct info.
