190E sloppy steering question
I have a 1985 190E 2.3 with 168,000 miles on it.
The steering has felt a little loose for a while but I just put new tires on it and now it is impossible to drive on the hiway. It jumps right and left like there is a huge amount of play in the steering. My question is this, I understand that the steering box is adjustable to take play out of the steering but there is no instructions in my Chilton manual, can someone explain how I would do this?? Question 2, how hard is it to rebuild the idler arm, I'm guessing that by now it needs a rebuild!! Thanks in advace for any suggestions!! Craig |

A common problem on the all applicable Mercedes is the Idler arm bushing failure. Over time they just wear out.
Also, pick up a steering dampner & a drag link. You should be able to buy an aftermarket draglink for around $50 & the dampner should run you no more than $35. Oh yeah, the idler arm bushing replacement kit is pretty inexpensive as well. It is a project that you could handle in about 2 hours w/ a couple of 17mm wrenches & sockets !!

thanks
Thanks Pat,
I did change out the damper because I had checked it and it basically wasn't doing anything! I will get a Idler arm kit and a drag link from MB. Hard to find aftermarket stuff in Canada! Sure appreciate the help!!!! Craig |
