Gas Odor After K&N Filter
I Have a 1991 420 SEL with 188,888 miles(Just this Morning). I just replaced the Filter housing with a 560 SEL housing and changed the filter to a K&N filter. Right after doing this I have noticed a gas odor coming in through the vents occasionally. Usually it is stronger after running it hard, or making sharp turns. I am thinking possible EHA? Or is the Mixture too Rich and needs to be adjusted. I cannot see any weeping of fuel or smell it under the hood?
Thanks for the Help........ |
Do the 560 and the 420 engines have the same size air sensor? If the 560's is larger, there'd be a gap between the 420 air sensor and 560 air cleaner . . . .
|
I did not pay attention to the size of the sensor. I had been told that the air pans were identical except for the fact that the 560 has another opening on the drivers side for fresh air.
|
There may be exceptions, but all the sedans I've seen (of that era) had snorkels on both sides of the air cleaner; SL's only have one on the driver's side.
My question, though, was about the hole in the bottom of the air cleaner - I thought that would be proportional to engine size, so 5.6 liter engine would require a bigger hole than a 4.2 engine would. |
My question would be why you installed a K&N filters????
Their marketing campain and publicity got you. it has been proven times after times that K&N is a waste of money in terms of benefit and a cash drain in some cases where the MAFS have been damages/ruined by their use. JackD |
The reason why I used a K&N is because of the experiences I had using them in every car that I have owned. Plus the fact that they are very cost effective when you can get them for about the same price as a paper filter (through shopping around). There is a difference using the dual snorkel with a K&N VS. The Paper filters. The difference in the improved in acceleration and milage is noticable. Many people have tried to Dyno their cars with and without a K&N and see little difference. The biggest diff I have felt is when moving I get more ram air because of the Dual Snorkels and a less restrictive air filter. I like being able to buy one filter and use it over and over. I have never had a problem with one and I dont think I have one now.

Hi Tyler, this may be obvious but.... if you have no underhood fuel leaks and your air cleaner housing is properly sealed, have you checked elsewhere for a leak, is your fuel cap tight ? Just a thought.
|
Well the fuel cap is tight. I noticed this weekend the smell is stronger after I have run it a little hard and then stop at a light or stop sign, then when I start to move again is when I notice the smell. It's not constant only so often.....It's really starting to get on my nerves. Thanks for the help.
