I just paid $101 to transfer a title and get a PA plate for my TE.

Annual registration renewals are $36.

I used to live in VA and they have the wretched "Personal Property Tax". In Fairfax County VA, the tax was 5.25% of the blue book value every year!! My five year old Integra and Volvo wagon were around $600 a year each. Ouch!

I had to laugh when PA residents were griping about the fee going from $24 to $36 several years back.

We pay an annual town tax on vehicles registered here in Connecticut. The tax is based on your town mil rate times the book value of the car.

The two daily drivers, 2001 Audi A4 and 2000 Audi A6, both cost about $700 a year! This cost never seems to change as the book value goes down, the mil rate keeps going up.

The Mercedes 450SL (1973) is a bargain at about $10 per year in tax.

State of Washington: $30.00 per car plus agency fees totals about $35. All cars are the same. Trucks are $30 plus tonnage fees.

State of California: Currently .65 % of book value. Governor has proposed raising the fee to 2% to make up for state's 35 billion dollar shortfall. 2% used to be the fee but it was reduced a few years ago. Looks like it will soon be 2% again soon.

Here's an other twist. In our neck of the woods,
for all passenger cars, independent of the value or weight, flat rate: $255.00 per year (US$165.00) BUT it includes the government run public liability insurance with our no-fault insurance. The flat rate can go up very rapidely depending on your driver's record. A few tickets (based on a point system) and the cost can go up to $600.00 pretty easily.
As a result, the insurance cost are fairly low: $CAN565. (or $US365.) per year in my case.
premium gasoline price is $CAN0.87 per liter or $US 2.14 per US gal.

Last summer that is how I got plates on my 84, transfered them from my former car, Grand Prix. The fee was only $8 when I transferred. I recieved the thing from the SOS to renew by mail, they wanted $125 for my 84 300D. However my 83 300D is going to be $29 (on old system, weight not MSRP). I pay $85 for my talon.

In Dallas county the cost for annual tag renewal is around $80. I think they charge an extra buck if you register by mail, which seems opposite of reason. The property tax on personal vehicles was repealed a few years ago. It usually ran $400-$600 for a $30,000 car.

Insurance rates are relatively high in this county. Cheaper if you live just to the north in Collin County. Better roads, too.

Just had my state inspection done today. $39.50 for the new test which monitors emissions under load. Older (pre-'96) have to be put on a "treadmill" with a probe in the car's rectum. Was pleased to pass with flying colors. My CO % was ZERO under load! Neither the tester nor I understand this anomaly. Maybe MB had invented the virtually emissions free engine in 1994-95 and failed to recognize it.

Thumbs up Mo' on Washington (the state)

Rockman59's right about what we accomplished a couple of years ago (getting all car renewals reduced significantly), although certain counties and (I think) some cities have tacked on "fees" since then pushing the total annual cost to as much as $75 per car.

Before the new law, for comparison, I was paying over $1000 a year for our "fleet" of daily drivers, RV, competition car, motorcycle, etc.

But the best deal of all is what our state calls Collector Vehicle Plates. That's a primary reason why I bought a '72 for my Mercedes SL project. Cars 30 years old can pay a ONE-TIME registration of about $50. That's right, NO ANNUAL RENEWAL FEES at all! Only downside is that you can't have a vanity CV Plate . . . I'll just have to get used to that.

Basic Texas rates are $50 bucks for cars > 10 years old, %60 for cars less than 10 years old. Dallas county used to have a personal property tax on cars, we never had that up in Collin county. No statewide personal property tax on cars either.

Being a smoggy city, counties in the Dallas area require an annual $39.50 inspection and emissions test. But diesels are exempt and pay only $12. Plus, they don't wait in line for their turn on the treadmill.

No state income tax in Texas either. Our property taxes are extremely high, but you can choose how much home to consume and hence how much tax to pay. All in all the tax burden in Texas is average for the U.S., but our taxes are more consumption based, hence give the individual some ability to decide how much to pay.

Since we're talking about plates, some advise pls,
I renewed the tags on a Passat I had and paid about $200, a month later I was involved in an accident and the Passat was totalled off, since I only had the tag for one month, I went back to the tag office to see if I could get the money I paid for the old tags transferred to my new tag, no dice, I was told that I could not do this.

I thought that you pay for one year in advance, am I wrong?

Does anyone know if this is correct that you can't get your tag money back, I live in Georgia.

Thanks for your advice, sorry for the thread diversion.

We don't pay in advance anymore (it used to be whomever owns the vehicle on 01/01/XXXX pays the fee for the year).

As it stands now, if you purchase the vehicle within 30 days of your birthday, no tax is due until the following year.

When I bought my last MB in June '02, I had to pay the (property) taxes AGAIN in September.

Sorry, you may be SOL

In Ontario, annual sticker fee is $74 CDN ($48US) for pax vehicles plus a $35 ($23US) 'Clean Air' pollution test every 2 yrs for cars 3 to 20 years old (diesels get a visual rather than a dyno test and most mechs will sign-off if they can still see the other end of the shop after you start it up).
