Gentlemen, are we talking about the gurgling noise when the car is just started? My 90 300CE does it for a few seconds sometimes (very few times) . I take it as no big deal , right Larry Bible ???

Hello Early bird,
The gurgling I have is also there after warming up. Even after a long drive I will hear it. I figured it was the aux pump but when I apply current to it directly from the battery the pump works fine. Greets, marc |

Blub blub
Thatīs right early Bird,
Iīve read a few times here that a morning burp is common on these cars. I think I will jack up the fornt ofmine this weekend and really burp it good. Letīs see if I just have air trapped in the system or if I am really producing air into the system somehow. Greets, Marc |

Marc, good idea. this weekend I will try a burp on my300Ce. I did do a drain , flush, and refill with destilled water and Mercedes coolant 2 weeks ago, so a burp should do it.............

I am not positive Early bird but I seem to remember the manual saying not to use distilled water in the cooling system because it would "aid corrosion" in the cooling system (or some such wording). Now that is on a 240d but I would think it would apply to most models.
I will check the manual when I get home.

Wow, I didn't want to hear that. I've read in many posts that distilled is the way to go for a good PH. The water in L.A. is very hard. Also the Mercedes manual mentions to use it if your water is too hard. I will look that one up again, tonight. I also thought I saw simular wording in the Stu Ritter manual. Thanks for bringing that up. Never a problem to double check on maintenance work.

Distilled water
Hey Early Bird,
Page 1-50 in the chilton 1974-84 mercedes book, under engine coolant. "A 50/50 mixture of water and anti-freeze serves as coolant for MB engines. Generally tap water meets the requiments for water. It is important you do not use sea water, brackish water, brine, or industrial waste waters. Also lime-free water, completely distilled water, rain water, or desalinated water should not be used, as this will only hasten the corrosion process. In addition, an emulsifying corrsion inhibitor should be used every time you change the coolant." The term "generally" and "completely distilled" kind of add to the confusion but if I was you I think I would start a new thread asking some of these guys with more knowledge what the real story is. If you do start the thread, please leave a link to it here so I can follow.

Thanks NC240D76, but look at this: MB service manual Eng. 104 Part no. S-2599-093 Copywright 1993
Water: Use water which is clean and not too hard. Drinking water frequently, but not always satifies requirements. The content of dissolved substances in water may lead to corrosion. If in doubt use distilled water. Not sure what to think now. Sounds like maybe last resort use distilled, but never says its a problem. Iwill have to check around on this. Thanks for attention NC240D76

NC240D76, go to search and input this "Draining and flushing M103. Check out all the thoughts the guys have on our subject. Plus one said distlled water is very corrosive but with antifreeze it is not and that is the way to go...............
