560 SEL at 100,000 miles....exactly!
Nothing serious here - just thought you might like to see my 1990 560SEL as it turns its first 100,000 miles.

Congrats Thomas! With such a sweet machine, I'm sure you're looking forward to the next 100kmi barrier (which as you probably know, the car will take in stride)

Having put in new injectors/seals, timing rails, sub-frame bushings and a Nakamichi in-dash CD player in the last two years, not to mention nice W140 style wheels, I'm hoping for 500,000!

To keep brake dust down on the front wheels I use Kleen Wheels dust shields
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ My local indie MB shop guy, who has been fixing MBs for 30 years, says those dust shields promote much faster brake lining wear because all of that residue gets dumped back on the lining instead of blowing away from the lining as designed. Any thoughts on this? |

The only thing stopping me would be a particularly sweet example of a 500E in a couple years time (should I ever get tired of the 420), but then I would likely drive that till the wheels fell off. I've heard that chromo on and off for 20 years.
I get 15,000-20,000 miles on the front pads and 30,000 on the rears. Only the fronts have the dust shields as they make most of the dust. The ones I have include vents which, purportedly, route the brake dust out on the inside of the wheel. The shields are actually keyed - you must put the left on the left, etc.
My driving is 75% freeway, 25% city. For many years I resisted putting these in having heard the same thing. Given that it takes me 30 minutes to change the front pads and another hour to change the discs (@<$40 the pair OEM!) every third pad change, I will swap the allegedly faster wear rate for less cleaning chores any day. Have you ever tried cleaning Bundt or 15 hole W126 front wheels after a while when the brake dust becomes rock hard? If you race or drive hard, I cannot advise you as I have no data. Since I changed to the 8 hole wheels (with dust shields) they get dirty slower than the rears (no shields). Just check how many MBs (and BMWs) are driving around with black front wheels.... Copy anything there to you heart's content - that's what these communities are all about - sharing. Much of what I have posted reflects skills learned here.
I just finished the timing chain replacement on my wife's 1981 380SLC (a 116 engine, similar t the 117 in the 420/560SEL, albeit in a much tighter work space) and will post it to my web site tomorrow, so look out for it if you want to do that job in addition to the chain rails. Next time I do the injectors, I'll illustrate that also. |
