What are these parts??
 

I got these parts sent to me when I bought an outside-temperature gauge - but I have no clue whatsoever as to what they are for!

Can anyone help me figure out what they are?

I'll venture a guess...

Bracket appears to be the holder for the temp sensor harness that would fit behind the bumper area.

Connector would attach sensor to dash wiring harness.

I might be wayyy off on that, but like I said, just a guess...:confused:

The metal rod is seated sort of behind the light switch, to the left of the steeringwheel... It goes from the steeringwheel-axle towards the left door-post... Sort of, I suck at explaning...:(

The connector is a distribution-block, for the signal to the engine tachometer(revs)

You don't need any of those things to get your outside temp gauge to work or fit...

The brace carries this description: Strut, from bracket on cross member to steering column jacket tube bracket. Basically it is involved with supporting the steering column in the dash.

The second part has this description: socket - terminal strip speed transmitter. The outside temp sensor harness connects to a short harness that two wires of which connect to this block.

stevebfl: You write that the temperature gauge is to be connected to some sort of speed transmitter - I've heard rumours about this before, but didn't quite understand it.. Why and how do I connect it? It works fine without as well...

The temp feeler harness attaches to a short harness that continues to the display. this harness is also attached to the harness/connector you show. They don't necessarily have anything else in common.

Actually when I look up a part in reverse like this it lists all the bodies it fits on. I happened to pick the one I described but I just went back to look at it and none of the pictures of the 124 540 part showed the harness I described. It turned out to be on a e420 that has this wiring.

The 190 pictures of that harness don't show what they hook to.

The outside temp guage requires the vehicle speed signal(VSS)to record temp changes. When driving on a cold day, the display might read 25F. If you park the car in a warm garage and check the temp display the next morning it will read the same as it did when you shut the car down. If you then start the car, but don't drive, the temp wont change. When you begin driving, the temp display sees the VSS and registers accordingly. The outside temp display has often been referred to as a "black ice detector" due to it's ability to help drivers foresee dangerous driving conditions. When you think about it, it's no surprise that MB thought of it.
