300e hood shroud separation

the insulated pad under the hood is falling off and flops over the engine when i open the hood...does it serve a vital function? im thinking of just removing it...does it preserve the hood finish somehow? many cars lack such a pad

ahh, hood pad! i was searching using "insulated foam thingy under the hood" or "heat sheild freuhauf fratastat" when using the search, its a name game! didnt have my manual handy to get the name right,
