EIS problem on e230
 

My car an E230 1997 refuses to turn over the ignition with the electronic master key or the spare.It lets me in and operates the windows but thats about it.The steering lock is still on but the key just wont turn.Please help before i petrol bomb it.:eek:

The steering lock should dis-engage as soon as the key is inserted. Once that happens the key will turn. Was the steering lock noisy prior to this problem? I've seen several problems like yours solved by replacing the Electronic Steering Lock(ESL). I've seen just as many solved by replacing the EIS. I would make sure the ESL is getting power before replacing anything though. Also remember, the ESL is just an electric motor. A few light taps with a ratchet while repeatedly inserting the key is an easy test. There's a lot more to the EIS/ESL than can be covered here but start with the basics. Keep us posted.

thanks for the info on the problem.but when it comes to mechanical know how im as usefull as a one legged man in an arse kicking contest.is the esl located on the steering colum.

Yes, it's located in the usual place. With the under-dash panel removed it's easy to get at.
