Hi

I have a 1989 W124 230 TE.
Cigarette lighter is on the circuit that is made with ignition on. That is without the key turned in the ignition lighter does not operate.

What is the easiest way, from DIY perspective, to remedy this so that power is available to the cigarette lighter at all times.

Easy:
Cut the wire that goes to the center of the cigarette lighter.
Make sure you properly isolate the loose wire end (coming from the ignition switch)
The wire coming out of the center of the cigarette lighter goes directly to the + side of the batter.
make sure you use a fuse (max10amp) on this new circuit.

I sort of understand your answer but I am a bit dull when it comes to electrickery.
I would be grateful if you could talk me through the fuse aspect -where, how etc. (Do I have to run another line to battery?)

Not to jump Jackd's train, but since today is Sat. you probably want to tackle this this weekend. Yes you have to run a new line from the battery. Easiest way is to use a crimp ring terminal on the battery end that will slide over the bolt for the post clamp. You can buy inline fuse links of several types at any auto store. Installation is as easy as wiring it inline with your new wire, with the fuse position close to the battery to make it easy to find and change. Crimp connectors are the way to go. Good luck.

Going directly to the batt will require you to run through the firewall. Try tapping into one of the batt leads on the back of the fuse block
