Old diesel heads
 

I have old MB diesels. The one of present concern is a '79 300TD that I acquired a few months ago, running badly. The head was cracked in several places, so I began a search for a serviceable head for the 617.912 engine. Turns out these heads are hard to find. I have a good 617.952 head, I think. It has a couple of ink stamped numbers "952" and has different prechambers from the .912 head. Otherwise, it appears to match up.

Can the turbodiesel head be substituted for the nonturbo head? Will I need to change the prechambers or any other items? I hate to part this old wagon out. It's pretty nice otherwise.

I can't help you with the heads question, but had to say HI to another Isuzu TD P'up owner.
I have never seen one of these things on the road except for my own, but yours is the 3rd one I have encountered on MercedesShop forums.
From your user name, it sounds like you must be using some kind of cooking oil in yours?

I haven't seen any turbodiesel pups in this part of the country either. Mine is a spacecab, with a sunroof and such. Is yours the same? Mine has made a few trips to Texas, but not as far as Weatherford. And mine has well in excess of 200 k mi.

I run biodiesel in my cars and truck only in the summer. Here's a few pics of my processor.

Wow, spacecab would be really cool. Mine is a longbed with a camper shell. Been a really good truck. Needs a master cylinder at the moment. Will try to get to that in the next few weeks. BTW, I have a factory shop manual, in case you need anything looked up.

DIESEL HEAD
 

I HAVE A 1980 300SD TURBO DIESEL CYLINDER HEAD THAT HS BEEN REDONE. ALSO HAVE A COMPLETE ENGINE GASKET KIT AVALIBLE IF NEEDED.
I ALSO HAVE THE VALVE ADJUSTMENT TOOLS NEEDED FOR THIS ENGINE INCLUDING AN INNJECTOR SOCKET, FRONT SEAL CENTERING TOOL, AND ALL THE TRIPPLE SQUARE SOCKETS NEEDED TO SERVICE THE CYLINDER HEAD.

I have everything, except the front seal centering tool. Where did you get yours?

Wagons like mine have an extra drive pad on the cylinder head for a hydraulic pump, part of the self-leveling suspension. Using a head from a sedan or coupe would mean I'd have to modify the rear suspension. Since it works OK, I hope to leave it alone.

I do need some ideas on removing the prechambers from the head. I know M-B makes a tool, and some have come up with designs of their own. Anyone have a foolproof method not involving the M-B tool?

Palangi, is your Isuzu manual a single volume or two? Mine came from Helms, and is two volumes. I have a parts book, too. Nearly 4" thick!

Mine is a single volume which covers engine and chassis. I don't have a parts book.
