MB 380SE 1985 100,000 miles.
When I am driving around 40 mi/hr and still slightly accelerating I can hear whistling sound sort of like a kitchen kettle while boiling water. This sound is only present during light acceleration in the range of between 40-50 mi/hr. When I release gas pedal the sound stops immediately. When I apply pressure to the gas pedal the sound comes back.

Does anyone have any suggestions what this can be? Does it require immediate attention?

It could be a slight leak in the exhaust system.

Thanks Benzmac. I will have to take a look at that. Is there a chance that this sound is a differential noise?

Is the sound happen in all gear ?
Have you try it at N and acc a bit ?
My 190E seem to have the same sound
and I suspect it is coming from the
engine part. My mechanic told me this
is normal.

The sound comes between 40 and 50 mi/hr. I should have described it more like a wind howling through not completely closed window.

Yeah, the noise drives you nuts, doesnt it??

I found the problem to be a leaf stuck in the ventilation intake. Pressing the throttle would generate a slight 'nose up' angle on the car, caused the aerodynamics to go to pieces, and the leaf to whistle.

Lifting off the throttle, the nose dives, regains the proper airflow, and no whistle.

Could be your windscreen wiper (mine whistles under braking)

Hope this helps, as stupid as it may seem

Just have a trustworthy mechanic look at the differential, just in case. I have seen alot of faulty differentials, especialy on American cars......

Good luck
