I don't know. I plan to switch on the next fill to (I promised not to talk about oil here again) Mobil 1 15W50. I just looked at the list link sent by rbmercedes and a lot of Castrols appear on the Mercedes approved list. Which one is in my car is anyone's guess.

Somewhere in the manual there should be an oil rating. Probably CD or better, but may have been CH-4 by 95.

Use only oil rated for compression ignition engines -- the C rating. Mobil 1 is good, so is Delvac, Delo 400, etc -- the oil postings will give you indigestion there is so much info.

Viscosity is easier -- use what you always did in a gas engine. I use 15W-50 Mobil 1 in all but the 280 SE, where I use 10W30 for the winter. Summer will probably be 15W50. Don't use 10W-40 oils, MB specifically does not recommend them for some reason.

I would only use exended oil change intervals if I were doing oil analysis each change to ensure the oil was still good. The most critical number here is soot accumulation -- and the CH-4 and CI-4 rated oils suspend more safely than the older oils. However, the 606 engines doesn't accumulate soot like the 617 did. I change oil at 6000 miles or so on everything.

As far as driving goes, amazing numbers of people get hooked on Benz after they drive one for a while, even an old ratty one. Nothing else drives quite like a Benz......

Peter - thanks for your straight-forward factual insight.

I have looked the book over and find nothing. I think there was an addendum to the Owner' manual that I can't find on oil. The Bently Bible on the 86 - 95 models shows a picture of Mobil 1 but it did cover gas engines as well. I have had nothing but success using M1 it in my Vettes and it is factory fill on the 96 LT4 engine and probably others.

Diesel rating on the M1 oil is CF so I will plan to use it. I will plan to use the 15W50 "red top" M1, I think it will be simpler to buy the that weight for for my entire livery. (Jeeps and MBs)

(I said I wouldn't discuss oil here but...) I did notice some additional consumption on my 91 Jeep 4.0L I6 at 160K miles using M1. I found no leakage and decided the rings were allowing a little M1 to reach the combustion chamber - not enough to see or find tailpipe evidence of - just enough to slowly over 3K miles use up one quart. I didn't start M1 in the Jeep until about 155K. I run M1 in my Jeep for 6K - doubling the change schedule.

I understand completely, for me it does feel good to get into something with a nice solid and smooth ride, but I guess I still have some amount of gasoline in my veins because the sound of my side exhaust is just music to my ears.

What do you drive these days? I guess I reached a certain age and just needed a "fine" ride. I love(d) the vettes but boy does this MB ride, handle, and show nicely.

The Diesel 3.0L is a far cry from the 350 LT4 I had! That was raw, neck snapping power - now I enjoy the secery because it goes by much slower! Hey Hey!

My NCRS Top Flight win was the apex of my Corvette Career. It was fun but the "work-in-progress" had to make way for some other things in this life. I think I want to try it all before I check out = if you know what I mean.

Stay out of trouble - and who knows - I may rejoin the ranks someday. But I got to say - an MB is a great - no a FINE car no matter the age and I'm finding that the MB crowd is just as feverish about their cars. No kidding.

Me and you are in two different boats buddy. Although I have no answer to your original question, I can tell you I have owned Mercedes Benzes all my life. This past Novemeber I treated myself to a 2001 Corvette Z06 with 1100 miles ( I still have a '92 400E and a '00 ML320.) My MBs are daily drivers and the Z is my weekend warrior. This car has made my an avid Vette fan, and wouldn't trade it for the world. Anyway...good luck with the MB, you'll love it. This, just like the 3 or 4 Vette forums, is an extremely helpful tool in maintaining your MB and getting 200% of your questions answered. Enjoy!!!

I love my MB now. The C5s may have achieved the fit and finish of the MBs now. The earlier ones had their problems. Anyway I read the book "All Corvettes are Red" by James Scheffler - it details the great strides they made on quality and longevity in the C5.

Wow...funny you mentioned that Omega. I was driving on a very isolated stretch of freeway early sunday morning and saw a car a couple miles behind me approaching verrrry fast. I slowed down thinking it might be a constable, but instead it was a Silver (like my Z06) SL55. He pulled up right next to me...we admired cars for about 2 minutes, but he didn't want to play. Don't get me wrong, the SL55 is a beautiful car to say the least, but I can't imagine it having the power/torque that my moderately modded Z06 has. I'll NEVER trade it !!!

really, thats amazing...The SL55 is very quick and very fast. I am sure you figured out, but Im 19 now. When I was 8-10 my dad and I did a frame off restoration of a 1965 Corvette. Its really nice, we drove it a lot when we finished it, but since we moved to arizona from california, we havent really driven it much. Its very fast for some reason, just a 327 small block and it can take pretty much anything. 0-60 in 4 seconds. I was at the porsche/land rover dealer in san diego with my brother we were about 11/12, and the sales man said this porsche is very fast, and we said how fast, he said 0-60 in six seconds, we said thats not fast. He walked over to my dad and said your boys think this porsche is slow, he said the same we said to the salesman, the next day at lunch, my dad took the salesman to lunch, and the salesman said to everyone, this porsche cant touch that vette. it was the first car I ever restored, since then I have done other cars, but that was my first. I will never forget it.

Mike..."supposedly" the C6 is going to look like that new stupid Caddy XLR or whatever the hell it's called that's coming out soon. Sorry, but I'm not down with that. I love the C5 styling. My naturally asperated Z puts 438 hp to the rear wheels (got dyno prints to prove it) with stock heads. The possibilities are endless. I wonder how much you'd have to spend to get that kinda power out of the SL? Probably thousands. Damn, I love American muscle.

I'll NEVER TRADE MY Z!!!

Peter I have been here on the ShopForum for only a few days (mostly in the Diesel area) and have not heard anyone even talk about dyno print-outs. It may be time for you to return to the CorvetteForum

Truthfully, I miss the Vette(s) but it was time for me. Your time will come perhaps. American muscle? I grew up in the late 60's and early 70's in highschool and the muscle was everywhere. Detroit Iron and leaded fuel - nothing like it.

Ok - back to my MB. I like it - it drinks diesel slowly - it is civilized and way coooool - put together like a brick....

You may have the right idea - an MB for daily driver (they last forever) and a Vette for weekends (you don't want to push 'em too hard ya know! After all it is a Chevy) .

I'm off to recharge MY batteries.

Enjoy that Z06 they are NICE.
