86 560sel rear shocks and accumulators
my 86 560sel has a hard thump noise in the rear every time you hit a bump. the accumulators were changed but the problem is still there. is there any special trick to installing these accumulators because the mechanic was not to expereinced with this system. i dont want to just go and replace the shocks because the price of these units are astronomical. is there any other remedy to soften the shock. thanks

Usually a thump is the result of worn shock bushes, these should have been replaced when the shocks were replaced.

thanks for the info but i did not replace the shocks yet. i installed new accumulators only and was wondering if there is a special proccedure to install them since there is fluid going through them if there is a trick to bleeding or pressurizing them. can i eliminate these hydraulic shocks and install regular shocks? thanks

I would replace these bushes then before you look at doing anything else. If you do a search here you should find some info or go and see your dealer for the part nos.
It shouldn't cost a whole lot to get these replaced. Matt. |
Nothing special about accumulator installation - the system is self-bleding, so as long as there's no leaks then the install is fine:)
I, too, have a thump in my 500E, and I KNOW it's a shock...they occasionally malfunction internally, so I'll have to pop for a new one (and it's very similar to your setup, accumulators & all):( |
