i have u.s.version of the osram/sylvania silverstars in my '02 explorer. it has very nice lights [for a change], the silverstars seemed to make a noticable difference.

they are 60/70 watt. i had to buy 4 because my truck takes 9005 and 9006.

the euro osram silverstars are NOT the same as the u.s bulb. euro ones are 55/60 watt and not tinted.

the u.s ones have a bit of a blue coating [very slight] and are 60/70 watt.

these are some of the BEST bulbs you can buy. they put out a nice "white" light and will NOT fry your wiring.

danielw

you are right in your last statement: the ONLY way you will SEE the road at night is with euros. period.

i would get those 80/100's out of those u.s.lights. you are asking for damage.

also if you run anything over 80/100 in your EUROS you need a relay or at least upgrade the plugs the bulbs go in.

Silverstar is great

I had the Hella Optilux and also PIAA superwhites, and the Osram hands down is much better. I only wished I had bought the higher wattage bulbs!!!

My next project when I get employed again is to get the xenons.

Hey I just broke one of the lenses again. Does anyone know where I can get those clear plastics protectors for headlights?

Thanks!

I picked up a set last night of the Silverstar. I don't really notice a difference. I mean it's there, but it's just "aiight." But then this morning I put my car next to my sister's camry and I can tell the difference.

Next up, put my car next to Alon's and check to see what' sup.

JCE did just that, he did part by part comparison for his new Euro light on '87 300E. He said:
"The Phillips Vision Plus 50s are really great. Installing a standard H4 that came with the 500E lights (marked 'Germany H4) in one light, and the +50 in the other, the entire headlight pattern was much brighter and more white for the +50. Also, the center and bottom of the beam pattern on the +50 was especially brighter than the standard H4 lights."

Do a search for "vision plus", you will find many posts about this light bulb and most of them are very positive.

I will put back tonight the standard H7 in one light of W210 to compare the beam pattern with the H7 Vision Plus in the other, I will post the result tomorrow.

I am buying the Navra H7 65W Ultra High Output from Daniel Stern at lighting.mbz.org for $29.50/each plus $8 shipping. It needs only 10W more but produces up to 2100 lumens which is about 750 more lumens than standard one. I will post the comparison results between this high wattage bulb with Vision Plus and standard bulbs as soon as I receive and install in the W210.

I bought the Silverstars after I removed the Piaas. The Silverstars are definitely better. The Silverstars are a lot more useable than the Piaas and they don't have the annoying blue tint that everyone can tell is fake. It is also half the price of the PIAAs

Philips Vision Plus (bought from UK) did not last more than 6 months on my car. And no I did not touch the bulb while installing.
So, I returned to dealer bulbs and no problems in about a year.
Both Vision Plus burned up. So I felt pretty well burnt.

Apb,
Sorry to hear that both your VP bulbs burnt out in less than 6 months. I had H7 VP on '00 E430 and H4 VP on '94 LS400 since April '01 and both still are working after more than 20 months. May be because my wife and I do not drive either car much at night?

Maybe, I have the good or bad habit of almost always turning on my headlights (just hoping that someone will not jump in front of me since I have a dark car).
It really irritated me because it went out on my way to Florida. Still had to cover 200 miles and it was 7 pm.
The good news is that on W210 the high beams use the same bulb, so I was able to change the bulb and keep on going (with only one high beam)

i was [14 months] running the philips vision plus 50 until recently, never had any problems, nice white light.

and a sylvania silverstar 9005 u.s.

you can see the slight blue tint on 9005 bulb.

another picture of the philips vision plus 50 in h1's.

i bought these for an explorers fog lights, but sold the truck then sold these bulbs to jce for his c280

i wonder why they tint the end of these bulbs, the h4 v.p.'s are like this too.

I believe it was H7. Shame because I really liked them and even posted positive feedback on this site at the time. I may try the Osram at some point but Philips is out.

After some more research, I found that Sylvania Silverstar bulbs available in the US are not the same as Osram Silverstar that are not available in the US, but they can be bought online through powerbulbs.com; Philips Vision Plus can be bought at either powerbulbs.com or autolamps-online.com.

The standard H4 bulb for W124 low/high beams consumes 55/60 Watts and produces 1000/1650 lumens. Both Osram Silverstar and Philips Vision Plus H4s consume the same wattages but produce more lumens than standard H4 bulb to justify the plus 50% advertisement, but how much more? Now, if you look at the bottom of the Sylvania web page about Silverstar bulb, you will see that 9003ST bulb, which is the same as H4 bulb, consumes 65/72 Watts but produces only 910/1500 lumens which is less than the standard H4 bulb. Also, note that Sylvania advertises: "Upgrade to the Look of HID".

I had H7 Philips VP on '00 E430 for both high and low headlights (4 bulbs total) and H1 VP on foglamps since April 2001 and still working as of today. I also had H4 VP on Lexus LS400 at about the same time and both bulbs are still Okay. I can see both cars with Philips VP have more light on the road and the headlight looked whiter and brighter than the standard bulb.

I think Osram Silverstars (not Sylvania Silverstar) and Philips Vision Plus consume the same wattages and produce the same amount of lumens, but I do not know which one will last longer. I am ordering 2 pairs H7 Navra Ultra High Output that Daniel Stern at lighting.mbz.org claims can produces up to 2100 lumens but consumes only 65W compares with standard H7 at 1335 lumens and 55W. But it is a little expensive at $60 a pair. I will post comparison result so you can choose the bulbs fit your need in a few days.
