Brake fluid leak at rear caliper.
 

What do I need to do with seep (slow leak) at the rear on one side. I see rebuild kits available for not too much, and I am a fair hobby mechanic who has tackled a water pump , rear link replacement, and brake pad replacement on my 300E.

Is the kit a reasonable thing or must I spring for a complete high dollar caliper. Are there things I should know to do the rebuild correctly. Do I hone the cylinder? or just steel wool it if no serious pitting exists?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Did you check the price of a rebuilt one from Fastlane (top of page on this site) If I remember correctly, they're about $60.

Mercedes Shop/Fastlane are the folks who make this forum possible. I'd at least give them a look. I've found their prices and service to be exceptional.

Just my 2 cents -- arguably worth that.

Caliper rebuids are very easy. The cylinder does not need to be honed, but it does have to be smooth with no pitting. If it's pitted it has to be replaced. If you can take it out and apart and inspect it before hand it would be best. Then you'll know whether or not it has to be replaced. If it does, the $60 rebuilt sounds pretty good if it is an actual MB part.

I keep forgetting that store is local to me (even thought I have no financial interest in them) and it is more convenient to get the stuff locally if I can. However, I did not see any rebuilts in Fast Lane when I was looking to buy mine and, for $60. Wow!:eek:

I just checked Fastlane, and it appears my memory isn't what it used to be. The price for FRONT calipers is $80 not $60 (sorry).

The REAR calipers are $130 (ouch) for a rebuilt ATE part.

The rebuild kits are only $15 though. My only problem with rebuilding it yourself is that you might get it apart and find that you need to replace the whole caliper. Then you have the car in pieces, and you have to wait for the part.

Just my 2 cents (arguably worth that).

you can get them rebuilt from different sources for less than half than a new one.;)
