Oops I meant the S600, not the 500

the s500 was a total writeoff, maybe some undercarriage, but nothing else except possible tranny.

the s600 'looked' fixable, but lots of stuff toasted made it uneconomical to repair.

I agree. The 2000 will be ready for the crusher after removing the transmission, possibly the engine and some body parts. The 95 S600 2dr, would also be a costly repair. There is probably a lot of unseen damage as well. With the fire being that close to the firewall, there is probably damage to some wiring under the dash panel. I am not sure how thick the firewall is on these cars, they may be double paneled, but I would still bet there is some damage under the dash to the electrical system. I agree repairing the car, would be rather expensive. Even on the passenger side front of the engine looks to have a bunch of jumbled and damaged wiring. Even if it were repaired, I would guess it would be a very unreliable car. I would not see putting over $9000. in it. It sold for nearly $15K believe it or not. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2400705789&category=6333

Strange. The last time I checked the auction on the junk 2000 S500, it was almost @ $12,000. Now I check it and it shows $1.00 auction ended due to a error. I am suprised it even went to $11,900. Aside from some body parts and transmission (if it was not damaged as well) it looks like it is ready for the crusher. This car is a disgrace to Mercedes. It should be properly destroyed.

Again- it is not just Mercedes. Here are two more European cars I found with fire damage.

1990 Jaguar-

The Jaguar sold for $2200 and the Ferrari is @ $3500. Why would anyone pay these amounts for these junk cars?

It's not a trend or even common, really. Sure it could be arson, but the occaisional fire-wreck on eBay is meager evidence of a real problem. There are likely no more of these events now than in earlier years. The difference may lie in the exposure that technology gives to such an occurence today. Instead of a fire-loss making a tiny ripple of buzz in the circle of friends and family of the owner, millions of people may see it profiled on eBay. Media amplification so-to-speak. Why are more European cars cars seemingly involved? Perhaps it's the high-value, not the place of origin that explains this. I doubt we'd see a Lumina with similar damage being offered but you might see something like an STS.

This 94 also has damage, but one thing different- this one has rear damage. Mentions started in battery area. A real shame too, as the 92-95s S500s are my favorite Mercedes. I think this car is the model I have been hearing that has the bad wiring harness.

Now- why would the engines on one of these catch fire?
This is a e-bay link to a 93 400SEL w/52K.

I have most recently seen on E-Bay a 2000 Ford turck, a 2002 Porche and 99 Jeep with engine fires.

Here is another. This is crazy though. Read the description. It says that the owner threw gasoline on the hood and set it on fire while it was being repoed.

I have seen a lot of these Land Rovers that have been toasted. Some I have seen have had fires in the engine compartment, but this one has interior fire damage. Strange- the description says that it was in a garage fire, but it looks more to me like the interior caught on fire, then may have caught the garage on fire. There is not a lot of damage to the exterior, which makes me think the fire started inside the car.

I also see a LOT of Porches, even late models on E-Bay that has roasted. There is currently a 2002 Porche on there with a engine fire. Also last night- just up the road from my house - a Dodge Neon lost out to a damaging fire. Seems like Porches, Land Rovers and Dodges suffer the most from fires. Even very late models. I have seen a 2001 Dodge Stratus and a 2000 Dodge Caravan with a engine fire damage on E-Bay, as well as a 2000 Ford truck that was burned to a turn in the engine and interior area. Do not see too many Toyotas, Hondas, Nissans or GM cars on there that has fire damage. I have never seen a Honda or Nissan on there with fire damage and only one Toyota.
Why are there so many late model cars (Porshes, Land Rovers, Fords and Dodges) that catch fire? Are they making them that dangerous these days?

I am glad this topic has come up. I personally am not a MB owner, but I joined this site in hopes of doing some research on MB fires. My father's 1999 ML320 with 50k on it went up in flames in a parking lot a few weeks ago.

My step-mother drove it and nothing was wrong. She parked it and went into a store to do some shopping. After only 5 minutes in the store, there was an announcement that a silver ML was on fire. She went outside and saw the ML engulfed. Within 7 minutes it was completely gutted. According to the fire dept, a short under the dash started the fire. This was a completely stock ML with no electrical mods done to it. The fire was contained to the interior only. Unfortunetly, my father lacks the time to go through a big legal battle with MB. Instead, my father's insurance gave him blue book and the ML is gone. We don't even know if MB even investigated the fire. The last I knew, the insurance company had it towed to their own lot. According to the insurance co, they will not investigate and press charges against MB as it costs more money then just writing it off as a loss.

In the end, MB gets away with this and doesn't have to pay a dime for what was most likely their fault.

86560 SEL and all others:

This is an answer on your second question : are 90s-2003 Mercedes as reliable as the 70s and 80s models? NO! and this is not MHO! My Indy and MB specialist confirmes it. Fire hasards? Just drop the word "fire" and you are correct!
P.S.:
I drive an own a '90 300TD turbo and a '94 300TD non turbo ( a 606 engine ). The differences between these two cars are tremendous ( in the advantage of the '90's W 124 TD ).

That is awful news. I have seen two cars burn up in the parking lot at work. One was a Porsche (wouldn't you know it) and a older model Dodge Shadow (wouldn't you know it again) . There was another ML320 on E-Bay a while back that had a interior fire in the front area. It was stated to be rebuildable however. The front seats were burned, headliner burned, console was also burned. Did not state the cause of the fire.
